I know I promised this a week ago, but I finally found some time to setup fah on one of my blades. It may be a week before it finishes a wu though. I am able to su in as the user and not root, so let's see if that is what is causing the failure to obtain work.

Also, started this thread because I am going to post some pics of the server boot process and tell you what to look for during the boot. Mostly an [OK] or [Failed] on any line item containing "YP", but a picture is worth a thousand words.

Look for the pics tomorrow around mid afternoon (EST).

That is truly awesome news, PinHead! Just the sort of thing many of us hoped would happen in this forum.

I agree perhaps the 100's of PM's we have exchanged working on this would have been better served if they were done in here so others could see that we were really making an effort and also maybe learn something in the process.

I Agree!

My secondary motive was to bring some of the work behind the scenes to the forefront and possibly change the tone of some of the threads. Even if it makes for some really boring thread reading.

Besides, there are some sharp people lurking about and you never really know who will hold the answer. Much like Folding Proteins or Looking for Keys.

Anything you need before I hit the hay for the night?

Can I fire up the blades and FAH on the server or will you be rebooting them?

Turn in,
it's 1:22 am here I am headed there also.

Until the results of the tests are in, no server changes will be necessary.

Good night and Pleasant dreams

On your K menu select
-> What to do -> Administer your System ->Add or remove programs.

Click on the "Installed" tab .
Expand the Server Tree.
Expand the DNS/NIS Tree.

Is YPServ installed?

Well, that explains the domainname not set error and the reason we can't su as foldy from a blade.

If you have the Yatta Server instructions, install ypserv according to those instructions. If not, I'll dig thru my drive and see if I still have them.

Raic9 is about 50% done with that wu, so we should find out if the user is the problem with the getting work.

After you are done with that and you have made sure to set the domainname (I think that is part of the instructions) then you will need to reboot. Pay particular attention to the blue arrow lines and let me know if any show as failed.

Sorry about the sunshine glare, the desk is too crowded to turn the monitor any further.

The test results are in:

Starting and running the client as a user (foldy) does allow for the work to be sent and new work to be downloaded.

I guess I should try it as root also, just to see if I can get it to fail to send work.

Yep!

The first machine I was testing on is now at 99%, so I am watching to see if it will upload work and retrieve new work.

Machine 1 finally finished it's wu and it uploaded fine, downloaded fine and returned to Folding fine. It did seem to retrieve the exact same protein though. Is that normal? Or should I get a different protein?

Did a [Alt][F2] - switch to another terminal session
cd /blah/blah - changed to the appropriate directory.
Did a "ls -alF" - to look and see if the file permissions changed.

And so far, during the client stopping , uploading, downloading and restarting; none of the files changed back to root ownership. That's good news .

Confidence, confidence ...

It's not that bad and I know you can do it.

Just watch the instructions, I found that some of the key info is in small type where the pics seem ( but are not ) more important.

Godspeed my friend.

Standing by.

That is normal!

Just do the next steps in the instructions with regards to configuring ypserv/nis.

It seems like I found a special command for if you make changes to users. Since you are installing after the users have been created, I will dig up that command.

Next step should be the "NIS(aka 'yellow pages' authentication) section.

The "ypinit -m" command will not work.
Try:
/usr/lib/yp/ypinit -m

This sets the users password in the YP(Yellow Pages)/NIS password database.

Totally lost here... All I did was install the package... =/

Can't find where to start form there?

Is this it?

DNS/BIND

In the initial Linux install, we selected DNS/BIND and NIS as server options, this lets the “yattaserver” act as a DNS nameserver for the diskless booted boards and also provide them with an authentication environment. You need to edit the server file: /etc/resolv.conf and add the line: nameserver 127.0.0.1 ahead of other existing nameserver lines, (which should contain the IP addresses of the nameservers supplied by YOUR ISP.) My “/etc/resolv.conf” contains the following, yours will have different addresses for the last two nameservers.

search localdomain
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 205.152.46.254
nameserver 205.152.0.5

Locate and do only this section:
NIS (aka “yellow pages” authentication)
