Palo Alto a success story??

As I understand it the Palo Alto project was a failure. The city installed fiber optics loops, the technology was based on SONET and was too expensive for residential service (even for high-income Palo Alto.) My two friends that live in Palo Alto use DSL from Pacbell.

Their municipal cable coop also went belly-up and now they have Comcast like everybody else (»www.cableco-op.com/).

Were the city taxpayers left to hold the bag?

Pissed off at traitorous, ungrateful musicians? Don't just boycott them! Trade their MP3s and really screw them over! And don't forget, 2 out of 3 human shields agree! Saddam really is evil!

I don't have an answer for you on that. I don't remember exactly how they funded the original project or whether the fiber they left in the ground was taken over by a commercial provider.

It's still in Trial. They also lease dark fiber.
