Just went down in L.A. an hour ago, can't ping anywhere outside of local gateway (no red lights yet). Plan to stick it out with Telocity and see if they can switch although I just spoke with them and they say it will be 4-8 weeks. I don't like Telocity service, but the reviews of PacBell are even worse.

Just got this from Megapath:

Dear Customer,
As we've previously informed you, the shutdown of NorthPoint Networks is
imminent.
While several Public Utility Commissions are fighting on our behalf to defer
this shutdown, it now appears that the Regional Bell Operating Companies
(RBOCs) and other providers of network services to NorthPoint are going to
force a shutdown of NorthPoint's network as early as today.
We regret having to report this unfortunate news, and, as we hope you are
aware, MegaPath is doing everything in its power to prevent this from
happening. In the event that this does occur, your DSL line will most likely
go down over the next 24 hours.
For additional details, please check our website at
www.megapath.net/northpointupdate for the most up-to-date news on this
situation. Our contingency planning continues, and by now, you should have
received several emails regarding the status of your DSL service and other
options.

Wherever possible we have already ordered DSL service for you from another
provider. You should have already received an email from us asking you to
either confirm or decline that you want this replacement service. If you
elect to continue with us, we expect that your replacement DSL service will
be available in about 30 days on average. In the interim, we can offer you
business-class dial-up email and Internet access; please go to
www.megapath.net/northpointupdate
and follow the links under "Immediate actions" to request this service. Your
input at this location will initiate your service; however, if you have any
technical questions please call MegaPath's dedicated dial-up support group
at 1-866-874-4329. Note: This is for dial up support only. Our dial up
technical support group will be unable to answer any DSL questions.

If any other service provider contacts you, we want to emphasize that
remaining with MegaPath is the best and quickest alternative to getting your
new line installed.

We regret this situation and want to assure you MegaPath has been proactive
in its efforts to minimize the disruption for our valued customers whose
businesses rely on DSL connectivity.

Sincerely,

MegaPath Networks

**PLEASE DISREGARD DUPLICATE NOTICES. WE ARE SENDING THIS EMAIL BLAST TO ALL
CUSTOMERS WITH NORTHPOINT LINES**
**THIS ANNOUNCEMENT DOES NOT AFFECT CURRENT RHYTHMS, COVAD OR NEW EDGE
CUSTOMERS**

In a network of a hundred thousand users, a few are apt to go down over a period of a couple of days for mundane reasons - and at this point, there may not be anybody to resolve the problem.

In Denver, we're still up and the system looks fast - I wonder if people are getting off of NP circuits already. Our site may be off within a few hours.

Re: NP Circuit Deathwatch: Up or Down?

Just received an email from Megapath that the RBOC's and other providers of services to Northpoints network will be shutting down the network within the next 24 hrs.
