My ISP does allow websites to run as long as you don't sell anything out of them. I do run hosting off my PC and connection(384kbps) for pics and screenies. But since I am now moving in to bigger stuff I had to pay for my service. 12$ for reliable fast service it is really worth it. :)
I did learn a bit, so as long as it is something temp and does not cost you more than it's worth then I suggest to be cool.

I have no problem with that. I do the same thing myself on my DSL isp. I host a website for a friend in the UK and have some phpbb forums for a friend of mine and I. My isp doesn't seem to mind. Unfortunately, it's a rarity to find isps that allow servers at home nowdays, and most of them cost over $100 a month (like mine).

This is just my opinion, but I don't like co-lo (of any kind, IRC, UT, CS, HTTP, etc) because of all the horror stories I've heard from people getting screwed (servers going down, no weekend support, etc). Plus, when you have your server at home, it's much easier to fix any problems that could arise than if the server is hundreds of miles away. I've always wanted to run my own UT server but won't be able to until the day comes I can live in an area where I can get SDSL.

Sadly, people who run or want to run servers at home are usually looked upon almost as bad as people who trade child porn, thanks to the cable companies' PR conditioning that "people running servers are the sole cause of our network problems."

It would be nice if the technology would come along so that people could get T3 like connections in their homes for a reasonable price. Unfortunately that will never happen. I did the exact same thing you are trying to do off of my comcast connection last year, and although I thought it would never happen, they found out somehow and cut off the service one day when I was at school. Get a DSL isp if you want to run a server. I have earthlink now and I run my website, www.henryhand.com, off of Apache, and my ftp site off of Serv-U, and both servers are allowed by earthlink's terms of service.

I ditched comcast entirely shortly after, and got DirecTV.

Indeed it is the sad reality these days. Everyone either bans servers or has upload caps that make them useless, many do both. If only bandwidth weren't priced so outrageously high, then ISPs wouldn't oversubscribe and wouldn't be as likely to care if you ran a server.

The fact that everyone accepts this situation is all the more proof that servers at home will never become a reality, at least in the USA.

Edit: Use a REAL ftp client, not I.E
Try WS_FTP, CuteFTP, FlashFXP etc

Even ftp in windows will work (Start > Run > ftp )

Click on the Admin Menu > Options > Server Tab:
Fill in a server name and your e-mail. Set log level to no logging (0)
Make sure all boxes below are checked.
Head over to the Advanced Settings tab.
Click custom IP, enter aweb.dyndns.org, and click the DNS tab.
Click OK.
Make a folder somewhere on your hard drive for FTP use. For example, mine is D:\ftproot

Add a group (Admin > Add Group) and call it whatever you want, for example "Online"
Go to the Paths tab on the right. Right click and edit
Local path: D:\ftproot
Virtual path: /

Add a user by going to Admin > Add User
Select the anonymous radio button and click OK.

By this point you should have a group under system and a user (anonymous)

Click anonymous, and go back to the paths tab, edit, and check Read and List

If everything works out I should be able to access »ftp://aweb.dyndns.org/ ;o)
