W5JGV join:2001-02-03 Natchitoches, LA | I have gone back to using my old AT&T dial up which runs at 38k on a good day. That's about the limit on the bad phone lines I have here. My DSL was only about 200-250k when it was up, so the dial up does not seem so slow. Anyway, my modeming goes way back. I started with Teletype machines at about 65 baud, and then I went on to 300 baud modems - I still have it in the closet somewhere - Boy, I thought 300 was FAST!! I paid $250 for my first 2400 baud modem (still have it, too) and later got one of the very first internal 9600 baud modems. I put a land line BBS on the air using that 2400 baud unit, and ran the BBS for some 10 years before I shut it down. Had three phone lines at one point. The internet killed dial up BBS's, of course. After about three revisions of the firmware, the 9600 baud modem finally worked most of the time. 14.4 was the next step, then 28.8, and then 36, and finally, a couple of 56k'ers, which outrun my crappy lines. Don't know what I'll do for DSL, gotta think on it a bit! CUL, but it was fun while it lasted. Northpoint was a good ride... |

| reply to Kaj17 I signed up with SpeakEasy.net last week when I got wind that the customer portion of Northpoint's business would not be picked up. As an act of good faith, SE provides its new customers with free, unlimited 56k dialup while the DSL circuit is being installed.
So far, my new circuit is at the cross-connect stage with Covad and Verizon. (Heaven help me!) Once Covad verifies the cross-connect work that Verizon supposedly did yesterday, I will be shipped a bridge, a few filters, and my IP addresses.
Once the DSL circuit is completely installed, that dialup service goes down to 30h/month, but still free, in case their DSL service has any difficulty.

Re: Disconnected people...how are ya'll communicating? Frostbite Welcome Aboard the Speakeasy Network. You should enjoy it. However, please be patient as many people like yourself who have come from failed networks such as flashcom are really bogging down the network. There are many scheduled upgrades to happen during the month of April to address these problems so we speakeasy customers hope. However, I came from Mindspring and saw and instant improvement in my broadband experience. In other words Speakeasy rocks.

Re: Disconnected people...how are ya'll communicat Well I am at the office on the Verizon DSL account
At home it is just dead.... Don't have a modem in the PC at home..
I tried to install a USB Modem I have at home but did not have the damn driver.. so I will be taking a floppy home with the driver.
So I will be on Verizon Dialup!
I may just dump the entire DSL ... and go with OOL! :> I will be calling them up shortly. -- Join the DSL Reports SETI@Home Team! My Suggest Linksys Router Setup |

 | reply to Kaj17 Does anybody know where I can find a copy of Outlook for Smoke Signals? |
|
 | Sorry, it was determined that smoke signals lacked the necessary bandwidth for viruses, spam, and v-cards, so Outlook doesn't support it. Try linux's /bin/smokesig or BSDs /usr/ucb/Smoke |

| reply to Kaj17 Carrier Pigeons...yeah that's it! But mine seem not to know the route, and get lost most of the time, Well come to think that's the same problem I had with Telocity.

Donh0 join:2000-12-14 Gilroy, CA | reply to Kaj17 Cable modem at home and T1 at work. I didn't cancel my cable modem when I first had DSL installed as I was with PSN. Since they sucked so bad, I kept cable so I could actually use the net. Then I was switched to Telocity in late December. About that time, rumors about NP dying made me keep cable for a few more months. Now all that's left is cable. After having 2 dsl provisers die in less then 6 months, I give up on DSL. |

If I was just a BIT MORE NORTH!! I have to settle for crapp 128K upload and who knows what download with crappy comcast@home. I hope your Cablevision service rocks Rammy!!
I ask Dad to get it in his store, for 29/month hehe. He refused . I don't blame him, I'm never there and he doesn't need it.
I'm stuck on AOL dialup for now, which I may add, isn't so bad for view the web and such. The only problem, I only have a modem on my laptop. At least I connect at 44K anyway.
Good luck all!! -- Northpoint dead: IBS Won't refund prepaid Months!!! |
