With recent visits of certain Microsoft big wigs to AT&T....Do you think there is a secret merger planned in the near future involving AT&T and Microsoft?

I wouldn't think so. Since Northpoint carried MSN traffic, and AT and T has those assests now, it would make sense that they would negotiate a way into using AT and T to provide the loops.

The article on the DSLR homepage seems to lend credence to this since it mentions MSN is not willing to play with either of the two larger CLECs or any of the ILECs.

just my opinion, doesn't count for much but a little fertilizer.

But AT&T's Northpoint is not one of the two CLEC's...I think that they are discussing Covad and Rhythmes.

I think is it very unlikely that they'll merge, but Microsoft is looking DSL backbone providers. Now if you check on AT&T's website, they are advertizing their new DSL service. Now there is a problem it is 2X higher than the same service I was receiving from Velotel. Before $60 and now $130.

I just think that this is a classic Bill Gates maneuver.

Let me clarify, MSN doesn't want to play with CLECs that are primarily resellers than means it won't talk to with either Covad or Rythyms.

They want a national backbone provider. That leaves out the ILECs. You are now down to very few companies. The obivously don't want to get bitten again so they will be looking at a "known name".

That leaves a few names two of the biggest being Sprint and AT and T.

BTW a classic Bill Gates manuever would have been to buy Northpoint, kick out all of the ISPs it resold to and use it soley for MSN.

between microsoft and bill gates they have nough investment in backbones nationwide some good and some bad well like CAIS they should work with the companies they have investment in to help those doors be opened. I am very dissapointed with MSN its like a little puppy with no teeth. If your gonna make it today you gotta be a shark!!

Covad and Rythmes are backbone companies...They are not resellers..as a matter of fact they are wholesalers of DSL.

Microsoft is very good at making money. Since there are such thin profit margins for DSL products, why would they jump into the fray?

Unless they plan to own ALL DSL lines...

You are correct, I was quoting the article (shouldn't do that I know)

Don't you think for Microsofts sake that they wouldn't buy NP? A brand name of AT&T and Microsoft will go much better than just MSN.

I don't think that Microsoft would merge with AT&T. Why would they merge w/ a company that just ditched all of their customers and cost them lots of money. Microsoft in my opinion didn't buy NorthPoint because they're not in a position to take on such a task.

Anon

I meant a partnership. Also, AT&T and MSN both have large enough brand recognition that they could blow up your computer every three months and people would still buy from them.
