I'm transitioning today

Just got this e-mail:

quote:
Dear Telocity Subscriber:

Welcome to Telocity! We are very pleased to become your new Internet Service Provider.

Completing the transition to Telocity will be simple and easy. You will continue to use the modem you currently have in your home. You will just need to reconfigure your IP address and you'll be surfing in Telocity Time. We've attached step-by-step directions for you, so this should take only a matter of minutes.

You have a special type of DSL connection.  As a result, you will not be able to use the propriety Telocity VelocityPort gateway. While this prevents you from ordering the value-added services customers can order for an additional monthly fee, you will be able to enjoy Telocity's always-on, ultra-fast Internet connection and the many other features we provide our customers.

Your Transition has been scheduled for:
Transition Date: 3/30/2001 0:00:00.
Transition Time: 8pm-4am PST.

At some point during your transition time window you will notice your internet connection has stopped working. Once that happens follow the attached instructions and you will be back up and connected on the Telocity Network in no time.

You will also need the following information to access your Telocity email account. Your email can be accessed at »home.telocity.com/, click the Webmail link. If you wish to change your Telocity email address go to »home.telocity.com/ and click "My Account". In the Account Settings section you will need to add a secondary user account.

Login Name: xxxxxx
Password: xxxxxxx

We look forward to serving you. If you have any trouble with your transition please call 888-773-3349 Option # 3 for Technical Support.
I have Cisco 675 (SDSL, CAP ADSL, or whatever you want to call it) so I don't even have to use the Telocity monster-modem. Attached instructions just said to switch to DHCP and I should be off and running. Hopefully just setting DHCP on my Linksys router will work.

The interesting thing is that I spoke with Telocity earlier today and they said they did not have an e-mail address for me. I gave them one, but the e-mail I got from them was to a different address - the one I gave Phoenix back when I signed up with them! Even when they are looking at my records they don't know what is in their database...

I got the same e-mail. This was the first mention to me that I wouldn't need the Telocity gateway -- all the previous correspondence and the reps I talked to on the phone said I would.

I'm on hold with Telocity right now to confirm that I really don't need the gateway but can keep using my Cisco 675.

The thing that worried me the most is the filename of the attachment giving network configuration instructions: IDSL03-08-01.doc. But, I don't have IDSL, I have RADSL.

I know Telocity was trying to make the e-mail easy to understand, but it would have been more useful to me if they had said "You can't use the Telocity gateway because you have RADSL" instead of "you have a special type of DSL connection". At least then I'd know we were on the same page instead of suspecting a mixup.

Once DHCP assigns you your IP address, DNS, etc, how do you find out what they are so that it can be configured directly?

mikewu99: did you get transitioned? The window they told me in the e-mail was the same as yours (3/30 8 pm - 4 am PST), but I'm still up on my PhoenixDSL connection.

Nope, not transitioned yet (as of 9:00 AM EST). I'm just happy that I got the email, at least they know who I am.

I wouldn't worry about the title of the document - I assume that the procedures would be the same for anyone who cannot use the Telocity gateway. Presumably the Telocity gateway works only with DMT ADSL and not with the variants (CAP ADSL, IDSL, etc.). There's not much to the procedure anyway.

Also, there are several names given to the CAP (carrierless amplitude and phase modulation), since it never became a standard (it lost to DMT (discrete multi-tone) in an acrimonious standards war). It is variously referred to as ADSL, RADSL, SDSL, and who knows what else (SDSL can also refer to a variable rate HDSL variant (2B1Q line code)). Anyway, other than the title of the attachment, I though the email was pretty straightforward.

Are all the non-ADSL subscribers in the final transition group?
