Anon | Well I think GTE is horrible in General.. on July 12, 2000, I called GTE to see if they could tell me what my Line Distance for the CO was because Covad says 9055 ft and North Point says 11856 ft. GTE is saying 21,500 ft, 21,200 ft and now 20,000 ft.; but the rep told me that he would have my line retested to see what is going on. Well the Next morning the Rep called back and said that my like qualified and he put in an order for the dsl. About 3 hours later I get an e-mail saying that I was denied for dsl and I called GTE again same thing excessive line loop but how can that be when I live 3 miles from the CO. on July 13, 2000, I get an e-mail saying that I am getting DSL on 7-20-2000 and I should be recieving the modem in 3-5 business days. I say what the hell is up one minuets saying my line qualified, than gets DQed and now again Qualified???? GTE should just get out of business doing crap work like that !!!! |

| Hrm. Obviously it isn't quite so good where you guys are, because last year when I placed my order the tech who came out said the only true way to know is by measuring from your end, not theirs. And he was quite knowledgable too. His little testing machine showed I am at just over 4200 feet. Could qualify for any level of service I want. My total turn around for the initial install wasn't more than 10 days. And when he came back to actually install the splitter - it was a Saturday afternoon. That part shocked me to say the least. Once he had the splitter in, the modem install was a breeze, and I had connection that day BEFORE he even left. I've only had one little glitch with the service since then, and that was eventually traced down to the ISP, not the line. Things could well be different now I guess, I wouldn't really know. |

Actually, I found them to be pretty good OK...first, here's the deal on distance.
The COvad and NP distances are total BS...they are based on maps alone and do not recognize the path the wires take from the CO to your house. If they say 3 miles, you are toast, but even if they say 2 miles, the actual distance could be MUCH more.
In fact, if you know you live 3 miles from the CO and Covad says 9000 feet, you should know they are blowing smoke.
So GTE measures the distance and says its about 20k feet. If you are 3 miles from the CO, this is about right. The reason is that the phone line doesn't just go to your house, it goes all over the neighborhood. The term they use is "bridge tap". So the distance is not just from you to them (already 3 miles) but the total of every place the wire goes.
Chances are, they removed the bridge taps to shorten the distance so you could get DSL.
You should be pleased they did this for you. Covad sure couldn't and wouldn't.
PS... my distance is 15,700 feet. Choices available: GTE 768/128 for $39/mo or Covad 144/144 at $59/mo. You guess which one is the better deal! |

Re: GTE is bad service The east coast office that you refer to closes at 10pm EST otherwise known as 7pm PST. Unless you are living in the west coast of the united kingdom they do not close at 3. They are also open from 8am - 8pm on Saturdays for sales and 24-7 for tech support. |

I had my connection up five days early and my speed and download has been pretty consistent. Tech support is 24x7 and they even called back about a week later to ask about my experience with my new service. No complaints here, YET!!! |
