RealPlayer is evil HOWEVER Wmp 9 has DRM (digital rights management) in it which is TWICE as 'evil' as anything RealPlayer is capable of.

Good example of FUD, Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt. DRM is only enabled or used when you turn it on, or get a file that has DRM in it. And it's not evil, it's protecting the content from massive stealing.

You just keep telling yourself that and maybe one day it will be true.

I don't like DRM myself, I prefer MP3 to WMA's anyway. However, I do respect people wanting to protect their content.

Also, I don't like the RIAA, I think they're nothing but a parasite leeching off artists, and I have P2P programs to download music illegally. That doesn't mean I hate DRM, I recognize it's purpose, I just don't like who's behind it.

Well, Emmett...I'd say it was more like last and least. At least according to this page from "Ultra" (not) Player. Unless they've written it in secret invisible ink, I sure don't see any "Ram" or "Ra" or "Rm" support. Below is a direct copy from the "Ultra" faq, entitled: "What file types are supported in UltraPlayer?"

"What file types are supported in UltraPlayer?
Currently, UltraPlayer supports MP3, WMA, MP2, MP1, WAV, CDA, WMV, ASF, ASX, WAX, WVX, MIDI, MID, MPG, MPEG, AVI, and AIFF files. It also supports the playback of Internet Audio and Video Streams in these formats."

Yet on other places on the same site it clearly says that it does support Real audio and video files. There is no longer any support on the site, so there was no one there to ask.

What's up with that, Emmett?

I d/l'd a Ram file (I wanted to finally hear what Don McClean really thought about "American Pie"), and, unfortunately, it was only available in Ram format. So since I had just read this thread, I figured: "Great. I won't have to install RealVilePlayer; I'll just d/l "Ultra" Player. So I did; loaded the Ram file, and: Squat! So...I checked out the site, and it sure doesn't look like Ram is supported. Wasn't that the topic of this thread, way back when?

S.

Is this one of these deals where you have to have Real Player installed or else it won't work, like you have to have Media Player 6.4 installed? If so, it didn't say anything about needing Real Player. It did say something about QuickTime. If Real Player is needed, would just the Codecs work?

Re: Play Real Media WITHOUT installing RealPlayer

Here have been my findings so far...any comments are welcome...

Note that I'm playing streaming video from mlb.com.

1) With realone player installed, whever I watch video my machine more-often-then-not completely locks up.

2) With the codecs installed only from this thread and ultra player, video does not play and audio does not play though it looks like it's doing something.

3) With the codecs installed only from this thread and jetaudio player, video plays...but barely (very very choppy) and audio plays great.
