It's still going to suck. That's why the sat-phone companies (e.g. Iridium) use LOW EARTH ORBIT, not geosync. Of course, the sat-phone companies went bankrupt in a big way because the market is tiny and getting smaller every day.

There is not a way that voice traffic could make it on time. It is the same reason why the old over-seas calls where so horrible, because they used satellites. With fiber running to most countries now it is no longer as bad.

DirecWay service has an enormous amount of latency. I guess another thing is a jitter problem where the time for travel of the packet changes often.

Then there is the clouds problem. When a bad storm rolls in there goes your phone. Reliability is something we have all come to expect with our phones, more than our internet connections.
