Anon | From Northpoint to Other Provider Has anyone received a letter of authorization from Northpoint allowing the transfer of their dsl line to another provider? Or has anyone already changed their service to another provider?

| No, not yet. Two weeks ago I signed a contract for DSL with ACD.net, and this morning they called to tell me that they're cancelling my order until I can produce a Letter of Agency from NorthPoint releasing my line and specifying its TXNU number. I called MSN who says the letters are "in the mail."
NorthPoint is gone, and although they sent a letter of agency to a long list of ISPs (along with an attachment listing all the TXNU numbers of the released circuits), MSN wasn't on the list of addressees. Apparently MSN thinks that NorthPoint is going to notify each of MSN's subscribers individually. That's MSN's responsibility, and I'm rather steamed right now, because NorthPoint users with other ISPs are getting their lines reprovisioned while I write this, and my line is dead indefinitely. After this, I will *NEVER* buy any network access from MSN!
If anyone has any further info re MSN getting our lines released, I'd appreciate hearing it. Best we can do now is call their tech support and complain. Regards,

Anon | reply to twokatmew Margaret,
I can understand why they might do that. I have been told that Ameritech charges the dsl provider a minimum of $430 per dsl loop install. Without the letter of authorization ACD would have to pay that fee themselves. With it, or after 30 days without it, they can transfer the existing line without paying that fee. There are also legal things to consider - ACD could get into trouble if they transfer a loop (in effect, a telephone service) to someone without the original subscriber's permission.

Not that I'm suspicious of things that are sent over the internet, but how can we be sure this is authentic?

EV1 was one of the ISPs involved in the coalition that was trying to keep NorthPoint alive for 30 days or so. They have been the absolute best at the timeliness and amount of information they've made available to all regarding the NorthPoint crisis.

Northpoint's letter to the FCC is available directly from the Northpoint site at »www.northpoint.net/fcc_letter.pdf. Sigh. it took a lot longer to download it at dialup speeds than with my old DSL line. In the letter they say they've issued blanket LOA to all ILECs and they specify how the ILECs ought to behave to make the transition easy. |

Anon | I run an ISP, and I received no shut letter for the NorthPoint lines installed at my customers sites. |
|
 | reply to Anon I had ordered new ADSL service from Southwestern Bell, but they were about to cancel my order for the lack of a short enough "clean" pair... the shortest one they seemed able to provide was 22500'!
At that point I produced the NP LOA, and suggested that they swing my DSL line over to the old NP pair (only 18,250'). The SWB folks spent probably close to an hour on the phone talking about it amongst themselves, but then about 15 minutes later I was up and running on the NP pair!

We all know that Telocity isn't putting in any more Rhythms circuits, so I called DSLi. Seems like I broke up a Friday afternoon Sales Team Party, but didn't feel to badly about that. I was told that Rhythms would have to reorder a new circuit - basically, start from scratch.
When I pressed about the Letter Of Agency, I was told "Rhythms has no procedures for taking over existing lines". HUH? No procedures? Howzabout jumping this pair over to that DSLAM? Perhaps this sheds some light into why the Telocity/NP circuits, once expected to be switched over to Rhythms were dropped? |

According to this
»Verizon stops doing NorthPoint switches
ILEC(s?) stopped accepting "hot cut" orders. It seems that there was a post somewhere at DSLR that Rhythms did the same. The reason I see that new line order is much more expensive for ISP (and end user too) and CLECs and ILECs want to get this money instead of doing relatively cheap DSLAM switch.
Perhaps this sheds some light into why the Telocity/NP circuits, once expected to be switched over to Rhythms were dropped?
May be it does. On the other hand, some of ISPs (DSLi and Megapath in particular) got Rhythms to do a "hot cut" for at least some of NP lines. So may be Telocity just didn't turnaround fast enough... -- Alex

| reply to Anon Damn,
I feel for you guys, I was just clicking around on DSLR and thought, what the heck let me check the NP forum. I just knew there would be no recent posts. Well from one EX cut off NP customer to another. Good luck guys....
I was an IDSL customer, lucky for me, SWBell recently turned up a remote CO (RT) just 6600 ft from my houst. So I am now ADSL happy. Hopefully soon you guys will have such luck.
cheers
BTW: I second the KUDOS to Everyones Internet (EV1). www.ev1dsl.net They rocked thru this NP nightmare !!! [text was edited by author 2001-05-11 12:13:58] |

Re: Well, THIS is interesting... Still waiting for my "hot cut" from Rhythms. Megapath sent me note a while ago saying that the "hot cut is scheduled for May 9th. May 11 now and still nothing, Megapath tech support says that that is an approximate time and to check back with them in 3 days if nothing happens by then. Still holding my breath. |
