I was on Frame Relay and switched to ATM..  Notice my sync speed..  I'm happy with 1.3Mbps but would be happier with 1.5Kbps thoughput. My noise margin is what concerns me ... though I've yet to lose full sync since running a dedicated wire from Bell's entry to the apartment building.<br><br>Should I be concerned?  Is there anything else that could be done to improve the margin, or is this simply a product of having my maximum attainable speed? The Modem Browser works as promised (Westell B90-36R515-01), although it does not work when Zone Alarm is active. We had the 640/90 Bell Atlantic connection since June 2001, and it was pretty poor early on. On 5/27 I put the call in to Verizon for the upgrade, which arrived on 6/2. It's rather high at 72.0dBm.<br><br>As the signal traverses copper, it tends to fade, especially true for signals at high frequencies and high bit rates. This of course places the well known distance limit on full rate ADSL. <br><br>Usually the amount of attenuation tends to be lower with 24 gauge (0.5 millimeter) wiring. 26 gauge wire (0.4 millimeters) doesn't have the same "reach".<br><br>Your modem's downstream noise margin (higher is better) is a bit on the low side as well, BUT, I have no trouble running at 12dB downstream noise margin with 1500/128.<br><br>A modem browser program won't replace an EWL however; but what sort of plan do you subscribe to with Ameritech?<br><br>BTW can you tell us about your Westell? I understand SBC ships a 2100 as well, slightly modified but with the NAT/Firewall interface intact. I, however, also own a newer B90 516.  When I tried installing it on that modem it installed and ran.<br><br>Out of curiosity, after I sucessfully completed the install, I then rehooked up my old 515 and tried to run the installed program on it: it ran fine!!!<br><br>I also had tried running the program through my router but it alas could not find the modem.  I noticed I had trouble telneting to my router after that(!), but I rebooted and it appears to run fine now, abiet slow for some reason in telnet mode. <description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/714229"><b>Sedated3</b></A> : Madness, I also have a B90-36R515; works just fine. <br><br>You're the second person who mentioned that the utility wouldn't install.<br><br>A quick observation - <br><br>I noticed that the utility available from Westell is identical to the 'older' version of the utility that some of us got from users on the site [mbrowser1.webhop.net], however the older utility is packaged with Installshield.<br><br>As a lark I tried installing the version available from Westell, fully expecting it to come back with an unsupported modem version error, however to my surprise it worked fine.<br><br>I remember that when I installed the "older" modem browser on a Westell B90-36R516 which was <U>not</U> upgraded to firmware 6.01.02 , the utility upgraded the modem from 6.00.08 to 6.01.02 ... Yours look very good.<br><br>Attenuation - lower is better. measures the signal loss between the CO and you. Yours look OK.<br><br>Output power - higher would compensate for higher attenutation.<br><br>Data rate - the data rate your line is provisioned for. You must've gotten Verizon DSL waaay back and never got upgraded, because those are pretty low numbers.<br><br>I sound like I know my stuff, but you can do the same by doing a quick Google search and reading through some of the links. ;)]]></description>
