| Mamma always said stick with cable..... This is unbelievable. I don't even blame NP. Our ISPs knew this was coming so why didn't they set into motion a change over with other DCLECs? Is NP the only DCLEC out there? Why did our ISPs let us down? Not all the equipment in every CO is owned by NP. I knew I should have went with cable...... Oh well back to POTS and hating it. Note: Just because I have set up an extended ping on my default gateway and am staring at my DSL modem, doesn't mean I have lost it. Perhaps you should. And its banks. The referenced Dow Jones article has gone missing, but the discussion, some text from the original and a reference to a c|net article can be found at »www.DSLReports.com/shownews/2657

This article: »www.thestandard.com/article/disp···,00.html may enlighten you.
The ISPs may not be entirely blameless. Then again: maybe they are. That's for you to decide, I suppose. But all the information I've read tends to indicate they've been doing the best that could be expected with a very bad situation. -- Jim Seymour & Karel the Computer Cat Agents Provocateurs Extraordinaire irc://irc.dal.net/#dslreports |

GarageJoeU2 Rocks join:2001-03-21 Scottsdale, AZ | Jim, it seems as though you and I have a lot of differing views. I must admit you seem very knowledgable in the tech of DSL and its installation. However sometimes I wonder exactly how YOU view the process. Do you have DSL? Who is your ISP? Your comments at times makes me believe that you are a cable user. Most commonly referred to (atleast in this part of the country) as a broadband user. But most certainly in being a componet for a business i take it from your signature you wouldnt advise Cable usage would you? Jim the reason for these questions is not to imply any lack of knowledge on your part but merely when speaking in the same thread to know your thoughts on such subjects to give a differing view or other knowledge that you might not have. Again my hat off to you and your comments i have read in DSLR and looking forward to an interesting discussions with you in the future. -- Matthew Ex-Northpoint, Qwest, Covad OSP Network Technician |

 | Jim, it seems as though you and I have a lot of differing views.
Differing views are a good thing .
In answer to your questions (which I won't quote): - I do have DSL.
- My ISP is MegaPath
- No, I do not generally view cable as viable for business use. Some, such as Comcast@Home, even have prohibitions in their TOS that precludes it even for light, SOHO use.
Thanks for your kind comments. And should you wish to share with me knowledge I am certainly lacking, I would surely be happy to be enlightened .
I believe you've offered insights before. If you'd prefer, my email address is in my DSLR profile. -- Jim Seymour & Karel the Computer Cat Agents Provocateurs Extraordinaire irc://irc.dal.net/#dslreports |

I would like to know your views on why you think that NP and its banks should share a larger blame than the ISPs. Certainly they couldn't have been unaware of NP's impending doom; why didn't they exercise any damage control before the downfall? As I asked my previous ISP would they let me go somewhere else, they said that although they have no info about if NP will be going down and that they had stopped working with NP, they wouldn't let me migrate to a differnt ISP (in this case the telco). The ISPs should also share most of the blame in not starting to look for alternatives when they had the chance. |

For background, read this: »www.thestandard.com/article/0,19···,00.html
My ISP (MegaPath) did what they could. They signed on with Rhythms months ago. And more recently, when the NP auction appeared to be in trouble, quickly added Covad to their line-up. They were in nearly round-the-clock strategy meetings for days at that point.
As far as why I blame the banks: the ISPs formed a coalition and tried to put together an interim funding package to keep NorthPoint up for a month or so. The banks kept raising the bar and refused to give any guarantees of service, or even that the network would remain up, in return. The ISPs were being asked to "buy a pig in a poke", as it were. The original Dow Jones article has gone missing (I hate it when that happens), but the discussion here on DSLR can be found at »www.DSLReports.com/shownews/2657
Neither NorthPoint nor its banks have seen fit to counter the accusations against them. One is given cause to wonder why. This one suspects he knows why.
Oh, and thanks much for the kind words

tbeymer join:2001-03-31 Washington, DC | reply to AR In my case my ISP (Flashcom) went bankrupt before Northpoint. In fact, their early "Were Bankrupt" web page directed us to Northpoint's web page for further information. By the time I checked it, Northpoint's page said "We're Bankrupt, Too".
I think there is chaos everywhere in DSL land right now and don't know who is to blame. |
