I'll check if there aren't any papers attached to the outside (usually in a plastic insert).

It shouldn't be difficult to prove. The hardisk came from a major hardisk company (Seagate) and they even have it on record that it was an RMA. All they'd have to do is call their line and pull up my case file. I'm guess PBB probably won't care if they're anything like UPS...they'll just insist I owe them money for some obscure reason (i.e. "We verified you don't in fact owe brokage, duties, GST or PST. Now you must pay us for the service of informing you this fact--that'll be $20 please"). ;) I'm still planning to fight it, out of principle. Just gotta be persistent (now if only I could get to a phone to speak with them when they're open. arrrgh).

kim : IIgs I don't think that this is going to be a quick solution. How did the shipper mark the customs docs? Did he clearly mark anything about it being RMA'd, returned for repair or anything? If he didn't it will hard to get PBB to reverse it but I don't think impossible. If the shipper clearly marked (I'm guessing they didn't) the type of shipment it should be easier, relatively speaking. If that is the case explain to them that the shipper is at fault and you'd like to know how you can fix it. Remember it's not much different that driving across the border. They scare me. You are going to need patience.
The "contact us" at the top of their website has many #'s listed for all different cities and there is a clickable map also which has email addresses which is probably better in your situation.
--
A man is like a fine wine.
Savant : Actually I think people need to understand that you will run into brokerage fees with ANY courier when you use ground based shipping. Ground based shipping is the 'no-frills' of services. The brokerage fees cover presenting the paperwork to Canada Customs, warehousing the package while they wait for customs clearance etc.

If you want to avoid brokerage fees, just use an 'air' service. Almost every courier includes brokerage fees with air-based service. Yes air costs more, but you also don't pay brokerage fees. I've used UPS from the US plenty of times, and I have them ship 'Expedited'. Yeah it costs more but there are NO brokerage fees when it arrives on my end.

The only other way to get around brokerage fees is to ship via USPS/Canada Post and pay their $5 flat rate fee when the package crosses the border. Brokerage fees are a cost of doing business with Canada Customs. You never hear people complain about paying brokerage fees when shipping UPS ground *TO* the US do you?

Regards,

Savant
--
Proud member of Mensa Canada - Worldwide site - Information page»www.mensa.org/info.html

IIgs : I bought a used DSL modem from the States too not long ago, though I had the person on the other end use postal mail. Came through without a hitch, no surprise charges--in fact no additional charges whatsoever.

I can have someone literally pack a box of dirt and send it by UPS with a marked value of "$100,000". Guess what, they'll charge brokage based on that value, regardless if it's true, false or even a misprint. They'll also slap on GST and PST on top of that.

Heh, funny to see one of those yellow UPS stick-it-notes above. I always see them in the lobby of my apartment building, with of course some large $$ amount marked in the brokage section. They're kind of visual warnings/reminders never again to use UPS. :)

They even suck for delivery. UPS always delivers around 11AM, when you're usually at work. If you call to arrange a different delivery time, they claim it's not possible. If you tell them to not bothering to deliver they also say it's not possible--the driver will make two more attempts. And then after the 3rd attempt fails, it goes back to UPS headquarters where YOUR supposed to pick it up. Wait too longer (say a week) and you'll lose the package entirely. The only solution I've found is to leave instructions on the yellow note to drop it off with a next door neighbour.

Compare this with postal mail. You're not home, the package goes to the nearest postal outlet (usually within walking distance) where you can pick it up the next day. No playing delivery-tag.

Postal mail has worked great as an alternative.

Incidentally, you can get the brokage fee waived by requesting (in advance) that you want to head out to the airport and file all the custom papers yourself. In my experience they just do it themselves, ignoring the request, but waive the charge simply because of your request.
kaybertoss : United Parcel Service (UPS) is gouging us Canadians with huge “brokerage fees”. I live in Vancouver and bought a high capacity laptop battery for my Dell Latitude through Ebay the other day at a very good price. The seller in the States sent the battery to me via UPS. (I’ve since realized that the shipper will only ship via UPS or Fedex to Canada). When the battery arrived I was shocked to see there was a brokerage fee of almost $40.00 CDN. I’ve bought two other laptop parts in the past out of the states with the seller shipping the parts via USPS/Canada post with just a 5.00 dollar handling fee. If you’re a Canuck, beware of UPS’s brokerage fee and make sure your seller will ship USPS and Canada post if you want to avoid this huge brokerage fee. What an expensive mistake! My savings on this purchase has been consumed by UPS with their rip off brokerage fees. Not to mention that the package sat idle at one of their transfer points for 5 out of 8 shipping days! SO, BEWARE OF UPS!
