No more monopolies

Verizon made their move... now the chess game begins.

Both companies were content with keeping their monopolies and low speeds and high prices and sucky service.

Verizon lowered the prices, now comcast has to counter. It's only going to get worse for these companies (which means better for the customers)

not if they raise there speed for the same price. 3.5/384 for 45 bucks a month is pleasing to me..

Just think: you could have 768/128 for $49.95/month with Charter. :-/

Check and Mate

Verizon made their move... now the chess game begins.
What move? Verizon hasn't expanded their DSL-serviceable areas and Comcast swiped the rug from underneath. Now Verizon is finally "waking up" and reconsidering their deployment strategies. Somehow I don't think Comcast has anything to worry about because as long as they provide good service (e.g., matching price increases with speed/reliability hikes), their customers won't bolt if Verizon bothers to provide DSL service sometime in the future.

I think Verizon is starting to see death by a thousand cuts. They didn't bother to provide the services their customers wanted, and they are paying the price. I have a feeling that if phone number portability allows for customers to move their landline phone numbers to their cell phones, many more customers, on top of the 650,000 who have already ditched Verizon, will begin to follow suit.

Verizon chose to become obsolete here... I for one am not shedding any tears for their lack of interest in the broadband game.

Re: Check and Mate

Comcast has been slowly advancing past Verizon. They haven't made any "Major News Headlines" with anything they've done, except for upgrade the comcast users upload to that of the AT&T customers they bought out.

Verizon's made the first big bold move to try and keep up. Right now it's starting to pull customers from all over the place to them.

Comcast has probably been working on a way to crush Verizon... as these plans are new to us, but are probably well-known amongst comcast execs for several months now.

If comcast ups their speed, it'll be over for good for Verizon.

Considering my current speeds with Verizon are 0kbps up and 0kbps down, they have quite a ways to go

Re: Check and Mate

Well, if the world of Verizon revolved around pnh102 then I guess that they'd be in bigger trouble then they are.

I think this article is more geared towards those who are in both Comcast and(not or) Verizon territory, and have the option of either of their broadband offerings.

Well the world may not revolve around me but many people like myself in Verizon territory can't get DSL because Verizon refuses to provide it. The fact that this is a good percentage of lost business for Verizon is what will cost them in the long run for not bothering to sell us broadband.

Yeah, I know of about 20 or 30k (probably way more) of folks around me who have yet to get verizons blessings.

Obviously Verizon can't deal very will with its competition.

Exactly. In fact, I'm in that boat. Verizon doesn't offer me dsl service. Comcast recently upgraded to digital cable/broadband in downtown boston and I'm *very* happy with it.

Additionally, just last week, I cancelled my land line because my mobile service (from tmobile) was so good. I'm completely Verizon free now. Can you hear me now? Thats me saying "buh bye". Screw the lazy pigopolists.

Actually, Verizon Wireless has poor coverage in my own neighborhood so I dumped them way back (when they were Bell Atlantic Mobile). But I'm sure they have better coverage in other areas, and they are probably expanding coverage to serve more areas. Verizon Online isn't doing this and other providers are eating away at their potential customer base.

I have to agree. Verizon has hung itself. I was never impressed by any portion of Verizon. I was even more pi$$ed about Bell Atlantic (which became a part of Verizon), but thats a past thread.

Me neither... the fact that our local calling area is about 100 yards wide didn't help either. If I didn't have a cell phone, I'd be getting totally ripped off regional intra-LATA calls as well. I hope that number portability does come into the picture by the end of the year as it is supposed to (again)... that will give Verizon another kick in the nuts to deal with.
