This arrangement has the advantage of being compatible with the installed base of set top boxes. But in the long run, what is desirable is a single unified fat data pipe that carries all interactive traffic: Internet, VOD, Voice, and whatever else comes along. It's the cheapest and most flexible way to do things. (Broadcasting will continue to use the legacy 6Mhz channels, whether analog, SD-digital, or HDTV).

I'm speculating here, but I think this is what Mr. Roberts envisions.

DSL Prime & Comcast speed

anon : Folks

I'm the guy who writes DSL Prime and thought to clarify what I wrote. (Yes, of course I read DSL reports. It's great.)

First, the going to 3 mbps is direct from the CEO of Comcast, who didn't put a time frame on it but suggested it would be fairly soon. He's doing that instead of dropping prices to meet Verizon, he told a wall street group.

The reference to "tripling" was not about speed but about the number of cable channels he would dedicate to the service. Currently, modems use a single cable channel and deliver a shared 28-38 mbps to perhaps 500 homes. Individual users have their rate limited to perhaps 2 mbps.

Where speed and price go is very much an issue of future competition, and very hard to predict.

The "multiple 5 mbps" is from an earlier conversation with Comcast, and very much is a long range goal, not something soon. That would presumably include multicasting video (probably HDTV compressed) to meet most of the demand, and a relatively limited number of "unicast" individual video streams. Comcast's planning is based around many homes having two or three TVs "multiple" and 5 mbps being a likely compromise instead of the 19 mbps of pure HD. Video requires so much bandwidth that rules their network planning, with internet data secondary. There are some very interesting network design issues, but that kind of capacity is far away. However, they are already buying some equipment with extra capacity to make this stuff possible, such as multiple GigE connections to some nodes.

Always flattered when Justin picks up my reporting, which I've given him the right to reprint as he chooses. But I'm not a cable expert, just happened to be reporting from an event where Roberts spoke.

db

This will lead to better statistical multiplexing and optimal use of bandwidth. Ultimately, this translates to a higher symbol rate (up to 5.12 Msymbols/s) and three times the throughput achieved by 1.1 systems (up to 30.56 Mbps). Additionally, the physical layer technology makes the DOCSIS 2.0 system more resilient to noise. In addition to bandwidth, this is a key characteristic for high-quality videoconferencing.

The greater noise resilience of DOCSIS 2.0 systems better ensures reliable service delivery, a major consideration for videoconferencing, telephony and other services being marketed to SOHO and small business users, who demand reliability. The new modulation schemes in DOCSIS 2.0 allow MSOs to compete effectively with alternate service providers. For instance, DOCSIS 2.0 calls for channel equalization, which will protect against channel non-linearities. DOCSIS 2.0 also adds improved forward error correction (FEC) in S-CDMA and A-TDMA, as well as Trellis-Coded Modulation (TCM) in S-CDMA, which provides additional error correction capabilities. Additionally, the spread-spectrum nature of S-CDMA provides enhanced resistance to impulse noise, a common cause of performance degradation.

A little more then we need to know :)
[text was edited by author 2003-05-29 16:00:06]

I run a 10 person game server. It is not a full server all the time. KaZaa users typically have uploads enabled and supernode on and are sharing something 24/7. I know this because I see it every day on the job. As for the 16 QAM and plant quality issue. They should do it so the flaky maintenance people who don't know crap will either jump in the fire and be heroes or they will crash and burn. Either way, IMO, the cable industry needs to be turned upside down. Give the young guys the chance to run a 16 QAM upstream system instead of letting the old cable farts run around not knowing what the hell is happening in the system. It is pretty sad when an HSI technician has to diagnose a plant problem for a maintenance person just to get things fixed. However, I happen to work in a system where MOST of the maintenance people are very qualified to manage the return path. But, there are too many idiots still in the maintanence departments nationwide that need to either learn their poop or get the hell out. I know of so many smart and talented people that are just waiting to get a chance to maintain plant 10X better than the folks that are doing it now. I have heard the arguement about maintenance people and 16 QAM before and think its bogus. Force it on them and they will either crash and burn or be heroes. How is that any different than any other product roll-out that we do in cable. Fly or die I say and let the technology weed out the idiots. I get riled up because I see ENDLESS potential in cable broadband that is going UNTOUCHED by and large. VOD and HDTV?? Who cares??? Enhance the data services and optimize them and Comcast owns the nation. From where I sit the whole issue is a matter of money....
TechnoScott : Us gaming folks do NOT USE as much bandwidth as you P2P users. Everyone is too afraid to spend some capital to make money in the long run.
