As I recall, SBC described the Tri-Cities FTTH proposal as "doomed to failure" and "too big of a gamble".

Now they're saying that it could work?!

What in the universe changed so drastically that this is now possible?

Could it have been that SBC is lying the entire time that it campaigns against Muni-FTTH?!

Why could it work? Because SBC could deploy it. Will they? That remains to be seen......would they if a municipality took it upon themselves to build out the necessary infrastructure? No.
Has SBC got a good historical record for honesty? No.
FTTH via RBOC? Not likely.
They cite "regulatory uncertainty" as the reason they haven't gone forward full-scale with Pronto.....guaranteed returns....yadda yadda yadda.
What impetus would there be to undertake what they propose if there is no competition to challenge them for subscribers?
Anyone who has taken an Economics class knows that competition is essential, and in this case, WIRELINE competition.
You cannot compare wireline to cable or satellite. Different beasties.
