I only publish this because I believe its something that many CA Northpoint former end users would be interested in.

Thank you for the email on your problems with the shutoff of Northpoint's DSL. On Tuesday the Public Utilities Commission ordered that North Point is a public utility and must give 30 days notice before terminating its service. However, to date Northpoint has not been able to comply with the order and reestablish service due to the fact that they have no money to operate. Other companies have offered to step in and immediately run Northpoint's system, and hopefully they will be able to start providing service shortly.
Northpoint should have never been allowed to shut of its service to begin with. The lesson here is that that internet access is rapidly becoming an essential service and while the government needs to continue to take a limited role in regulating the internet, there are places were the government must step in to protect the consumers.
One major concern with the failure of Northpoint and the shaky financial ground that other DSL providers are in is reduced competition. Right now the only provider of DSL services that is on solid financial ground is PacBell.
If other DSL providers fail PacBell will take a monopoly position and we will see service cost raise. Therefore we plan to work closely with the Public Utilities Commission to assure that DSL marketplace remains competitive.
