 | Evolving Edge DSL (Northpoint) refugee...help! I called Telocity, they said not in my area. I called Earthlink DSL, they said the same. I called a bunch of other places, they said no. I need a service under 49.95 a month! So I get an e-mail from DSLi, who says in my area, I get for 49.95 a month, 1.1 meg ADSL! WHOA! I don't know if that's the upstream or downstream, but holy cow, that is freakin' awesome. However, Evolving Edge Comm. installed some Northpoint thingy at my house, and gave me an SDSL routher "Copper Mountain". You think I have to install a new line and get a new routher, or just one of the above, or neither? Oh, and btw, how is iDSL? I live about 11,000 feet from the central phone company thingy, and got 784/3something with Evolving Edge and they say 1.1 meg, without specifying. And last thing, what's a static IP address and Pop 3 Email Accounts? Please contact me kraygkidd@hotmail.com, I really need help. I've been connectionless for almost 3 weeks now. |

You could spend a life calling ISPs. First thing you should know - who can provide line to you home instead of Northpoint. Now that NP has gone, it can be COVAD, RHYTHMS or your local phone company (Verizon, BellSouth or whatever else). So first you should check with them if they have any DSL equipment at your CO. Just go directly to www.covad.com and www.rhythms.com and check your phone number. If there aren't these two at your CO, most likely you stuck with your phone company. It's bad.
I need a service under 49.95 a month!
These prices are almost in the past. Most likely by the end of the year your choices will be cable or telco ADSL anyway. Rhythms goes down, and all ISPs tend to rise prices.
So I get an e-mail from DSLi...
DSLi timely too optimistic. But it's possible you really can have ADSL with them and BellSouth as line provider. Any case, you should call them and ask who will provide the line itself. Depending on it, you may have another choices.
I don't know if that's the upstream or downstream...[I]
Looks like they offer 1500/750 ADSL, but it is upper limit. It may be any speed depending of your line.
[I]You think I have to install a new line and get a new routher...
If you'll get ADSL, it will be over your existing voice phone line - forget your SDSL line. They don't have to install new line, but they will check your voice line for a period of time (2-3 weeks) and they will install "splitters" at your place to filter voice signal from DSL signal. And you'll have to get new modem.
...how is iDSL? I live about 11,000 feet from the central ...
iDSL is DSL over ISDN and has upper speed limit 144kbps. Used at distances more than ~14000 ft when ADSL doesn't work. Good, but expensive ( ~$80 at least). If IDSL is your only choice, consider Ricochet wireless internet - it is about same speed (128 kbps) and about same price, but you haven't deal with phone company and phone line.
At your distance ADSL should work fine - if you distance is accurate. I think it is, because your SDSL worked.
static IP address and Pop 3 Email Accounts...
"If nothing helps, finally read the manual!"
Static IP means (practically) that you can run web and mail servers on your computer and that it will work fine with any operation system (PPOE, for example, requires some special software which has many limitations). If your use ICQ, IRC or other services which use IP-connection, they are configured easily with static IP.
POP3 e-mail accounts means your e-mail addresses and mailboxes which your can read with almost any mail program, from any computer. Basically it means almost nothing, because almost all (not hotmail, I guess) provide this type of e-mail service.
