Cheap PC parts/builder?

I'd like to buy myself a nice PC. My budget is about $1500 (a little bit more with screen if possible) so I'd like to know where in NY you can find cheap parts or if someone knows a cheap builder.
I'd like for the price to (at least) match eBay prices.
Thanks

SPEND at least $150- 200 on Motherboard. That is the capt of the ship so it needs to be good quality. Use ATX style, AT is an older standard. You might be able to get a dual processor motherboard, and some cheap 800 MHZ P2s. That would give you 1.6 GHZ combined. You could also O/C them, to 875 MHZ, which would give you 1.75 GHZ. Check with NightLinks, he has built a nice Tower system. Or Good Ol' Optimized.

If you want to build your own, go to www.newegg.com
They have a wide selection and great prices. It's where I go for computer parts. If you want a built computer, buy a Dell, their prices are hard to beat.

If you are confident enough to try I definitely recommend you build your own. This way you are getting exactly what you want and it costs you nothing for the labor. There is plenty of help available in the Hardware Forum if you have questions.

$1500 will go an awful long way, should be top of the line

I just built one and I ordered all my parts from »www.newegg.com

all imj gona say what ever you get, get a nice video card, at least a Ti4600 or go with RAdeon 9700 Pro.

If u want i can build a computer for you for dirt cheap.

all u need to do is pay for parts, mostly free or cheap as hell with rebates... and some used parts from people....

you can get a nice flat pannel monitor for 300 dollars now that leaves what 1200 right?

lets start off with a nice video card and RAM
$300 Radeon ATI 9700 maybe 320 »www.ocsystem.com/atirad8512dd1.html
$69 512MB RAM PC3200 Micron »buyaib.com/sa51pctrddwv.html
$540 P4 800mhz bus 3.0Ghz with asus mobo »www.micropro.com/item.htm?item_id=MBASP4S800
-----------------------------------------------------
Add shipping here prolly 30 bucks.

940

so now what is left....

1 cdrw, u can get one for 30-40 bucks after rebate
1 hard drive around 70-80 bucks after rebate
1 floppy if u need it but i say u dont. but its $10 bucks.
1 computer CASE $35
1 sound card $60 audigy MP3 or gamer should be around there
1 network card 10 dollars.
1 modem $20 bucks.
1 DVD DRIVE 16x maybe 40 dollars.
----------------------
40+80+10+35+60+10+20+40= around 200

1150 dollars just for the main parts

now u need a key board mouse speakers etc...

nice blue tooth mouse and keyboard is 150 bucks.
u can get a keyboard for 25 bucks, mouse for 25 bucks.
speakers u shouldnt be cheap on u should invest into something good since u got 5.1 surround sound. so it should cost around 90 bucks.

that leaves 200 about for monitor, u can easily buy a regular flat screen 19" monitor for 150-200 if u want flat panel should be more expensive.

-------------------------------

but this is top of the line stuff buddy. if u want something less WOW, u should go with AMD u could save 200 bucks and buy an 17" or 15" flat panel.

FYI, if u go with AMD u can save maybe more then 200 bucks... the price difference between the two is quite high.

plus if u get 2.8Ghz u can save 200 bucks there, but the main points is u need good Samsung or micron Ram, and a good vedio card then u need something that can handle the performance of those items. an ATA133 hard drive would sound nice right about now.

if you buy your parts online then buy them from one place. newegg.com is great no tech support but you can get all the support right here.
oh yeah, i should add that if you buy something from newegg make sure you check if it comes with free gifts like t-shirts, stickers and more fun stuff

Thanks for all of your answers. I went to newegg and I was able to (virtually) build the computer of my dreams for an impressively cheap price. Here are the specs:
Thermaltake XASER III V2420+U case
PIONEER INTERNAL ATAPI DVD-RECORDABLE MODEL DVR-105
MAXTOR 120GB 7200RPM SATA HARD DRIVE
GEIL DDR RAM 512MB PC-3200 x2
Samsung monitor LCD 171N-Silver
ASUS Motherboard P4P800 deluxe
Intel Pentium 4 / 2.8CGHz 512k socket 478 Hyper Threading Technology 800 MHz FSB
ATI RADEON 9500 PRO 128MB DDR DVI AGP
All that costs me only $26 of shipping for a total amount of $ 1,795.98
That is a little bit more expensive than expected but that includes a great LCD 17". I didn't go with the latest radeon mainly for pricing reasons and I didn't get any sound card because I use the Audiophile USB from M-audio. Now I just need to convince my wife that it really is the computer I want/need. A friend told me that to build it's mainly like a lego with less pieces but he also said to be careful when putting some thermal compound between the p4 and its fan.
Will I need a floppy drive and does anyone know what's going to happen when I turn the computer on for the first time?

Yeah you'll need a floppy so you can make startup disc's etc
Btw great pick on the pioneer drive
It's awesome hasn't failed me yet
Once you put it together you'll have to tinker with bios
and setup your hardrive and settings
(most come with floppies to set it up and partition etc)
and yes be careful when applying thermal compound
I advise artic silver,I usually just take the back of a match book and apply a very thin layer on it then put it on the corresponding metal shield on the cpu, remember just a thin coat, the rest I'm sure you can figure out yourself,it's one of the fun parts just be very careful with the board and cpu pins, you don't want to bend any of those, have fun and good luck

I got my barebones system from »www.pcsourceonline.com. They were pretty good.

With all the deals you can find on www.slickdeals.net and www.bensbargains.net, you can get the parts, like Hard Drive and Memory, Video card, etc. seperately.

You can get something good in that price range. I would just recommend buying barebones, cuz I hate putting together the motherboard and stuff.

Hope this helps

I have to correct this some.
You don't need floppy because all the new boards are capable to boot from cd-rom but it is still a good think to have one.
Also if you did not order it make sure you get that cheap XP Pro from them too.

You need a floppy
for example windows xp
when you first run it it will run from cd and create startup discs which you will need for later on
but if you're doing a clean install you need to have the floppy to prepare the devices, then it will proceed to load from cd-rom
I have a Msi board and have also tested it out on one of the latest Asus boards when doing a custom install for a customer
so yeah you'll definitely need it
With win2k I never needed a floppy but Win xp works a bit different
»www.tweakxp.com I believe has the startup discs you will need if you're going the windows xp route

Dreadwing6 See Profile i don't want to start argument i hope you sensed that.
But i do have to correct you. As long as your BIOS detects the drives and you start the XP setup from cd-rom it will get you to a screen where it will show the drives and ask you where to create the partitions and what file format(NTFS or FAT32)
No need for start up diskettes in Xp either. If you want recovery diskettes you can burn it on cd and in the event you need it just use the cd.
But i still think its good to have the floppy.
