Re: Uncripple your 5200 router firmware today!!!

Hi,

I need to set mss to 1460 as well. Otherwise, I am unable to access some websites. I have tried to use telnet, but I can not find the correct parameter to change MSS. Anybody had any ideas ?

thanks,

It's not a feature of the 5200. Instead you must lower your PC NIC (Ethernet card) MTU on each PC connected to the LAN behind the 5200 by using Dr TCP »/front/drtcp.html

»Tweaking FAQ »DRTCP: How do I use it and what are all these settings?

»Tweaking FAQ »MTU: How high can/should mine be?

»Tweaking FAQ »Max MTU: How do I find mine?

»Tweaking FAQ »MTU: How do I raise/lower mine?

»Tweaking FAQ »MSS: What is it?

»Tweaking FAQ »Should all of my machines use the same MTU/IPMTU?

quote:
For a standard TCP/IP packet, there are two headers -- the IP Header and the TCP header. Each of these are 20 bytes in size. The maximum size Ethernet packet is 1500 bytes, therefore, the maximum possible data field -- and therefore the maximum possible MSS -- is 1460. If you use PPPoE, this adds a third header which is 8 bytes in size. Therefore, with PPPoE, the maximum MSS is 1452.

Hi,

Thank you very much for the information, but this means that I am unable to use 5200 as a router for my clients that are using PPPoE based ADSL service in Canada.
Unfortunately, I am unable to change all workstations behind each 5200 to lower MTU value. That's really too bad, because 5200 (in router mode) looks like the best combination of functionality and price.

Would you have any recommendation that are reasonable priced, as an ADSL router ?

Huh? That's standard for all PPPoE ISPs. It's a two second fix that is needed to work with PPPoE and at the same time the RWIN needs to be increased to take full advantage of the Broadband speeds.

I really don't understand why as they ALL need to be tweaked anyway for RWIN and the MaxMTU setting is right here in the same DR TCP utility.

BTW, MSS of 1460 is the default for Ethernet, but not for PPPoE.

Read here »Broadband Tweaks to see the hundreds of thousands that have tweaked their PPPoE connections.

Hi,

I was trying to find out whether I could use 5200 with PPPoE ADSL service for a public access Internet service point. Users will simply connect their laptops/workstations to an ethernet switch, attached to 5200. They will use the Internet service for a short duration and leave. I can not force them to adjust MTU at this point. One of the requirements of this project is a routable IP address for each session, therefore I can not use NAT.

Thank you

It sounds like you need a Business Class DSL line that is Static or DHCP (not PPPoE or A) with routed subnets since PPPoA and PPPoE are going to use NAT/NAPT. You really need a Business Class Router instead of the Home User oriented 5200 (It's a SOHO aka Small Office, Home Office router).

PPPoE is used on Residential Accounts almost exclusively and for sharing via Private LAN IPs a single Public IP.

Hi,

I tend to agree. I am actually using a local ADSL ISP in Toronto that is able to provide me with a routed subnet through a PPPoE ADSL service. Therefore, my monthly operational costs are much lower than for PVC based ADSL service.
What would you recommend for a good ADSL router for this type of application.

thanks,

The 5861 might fit the bill or a Cayman 2440H. Otherwise, I don't know.

Hi,

Thank you for your help. I will take a look at both of them.
