AOL and Kids

I have been using the ver 9 software for a while now and it is good. I use AOL with a BYOA account (ie only for content) and if you have kids it is brilliant. Protected content, chat, email etc. I just wished that I had discovered it a long time ago.

I personally still use my MS browser 90% of the time for the extra speed but I sleep easier knowing that my kids cant.

Funny, a buddy of mine had it and he liked it, cept for the fact his kids still got tons of porn spam. Thats why he cancelled it about a month after he got it.

Sure they can't get into anything on AOL, but if they get porn spam, thats bad enough.

Uhhh how can you think the kids are "safe" or blocked from what you don't want them to see, with a BYOA account???

Just shut down the sanitized AOL and go on the net directly...
Or If I were them, just leave AOL running full screen... and the hear you coming just a quick ALT-TAB pops it back to the front.

I dont have anything against the software you get with AOL, I am sure it is a great portal for inexperienced internet users or people that like the extra contents. The reason I hate aol is the fact that I tried it out when I had dialup because I got one of those 500 minutes free usage cd's in a store nearby. I used it, didn't like it so I just cancelled the service. First they begged me to stay - as a another user already pointed out. I also had to answer no about 5 times when they babbled on about the great content I would miss - and "are you sure you want to cancel the subscription sir?"

Dammit I just want to cancel my service!!!!

Ok, after I cancelled the service I have gotten 27 (!) Cd's with their !@"¤@ offers. Talk about waste of resources. I think such mass marketing with metal cases and cd's should be made illegal. I will just throw it in the trash anyway - and that is probably what millions of others do too. Not only is it a waste of resources but AOL seems just as desperate as that lonely drunk guy or girl looking for a partner at 3 AM when the bar closes. Well - at least the AOL Cd's dont smell kerosene.

I've gotten 25-its saved me money, I don't have to buy coasters for drinks now. I have a stack of them on my desk to set my glass on. A little crazy glue and 10 cd's-instant cool coaster. I just put them label side down.

AOl has Internet Access Controls that prevent connection to the internet without logging onto AOL even if on a non AOL high speed connection. If you have DSL and click on IE AOL will require you login for web access. Great if you have kids.

Nothing is foolproof but I would hope that after 15 years in the IT industry I can outsmart my 11 year old. There are plenty of things you can do (especially with XP Pro) to stop kids accessing the normal browser. AOL is just another bit of peace of mind and for me, the $9 per month is worth it.

Then again what are you doing???

I was once an 11 year old... where OK the evil was Playboy... but is MANDATED isolation a substitute for discussing the issues involved. They are going to see it all sooner or later... wouldn't you want them to be prepared for it rather than suddenly finding themselves in a seeming candy store???

As a delayed college student (took a few years off for work) it astounded me the number of Freshman who instantly crashed and burned simply because they had never been out from under the security blanket since born.

Those who had, maybe not stellar, but did OK.

My kids are fairly worldly wise. They have traveled extensively internationally, speak 4 languages etc etc. I just don't want to voluntarily give sickos access to my daughters bedroom, unfortunately there are plenty around. I use AOL as another form of Firewall, ie stop unwanted outsiders from getting into your computer. For me it works, if you don't want that feature you can also set your child up to have the access of an adult. I don't think that parenting is the subject of this forum
