Riverside, CA | Best DSL Modem Money Can Buy ? Whats the best dsl modem I can get?
A90-210030-04
is that one good or is my zyxel 645 (FF firmware name) just as good. Btw that one is the one that won't upgrade. Like people did with there zyxels 643's....
I have these modems here also out of all of these which is the best?
Including the ones above ..
SpeedStream 5360
Westell B90-36R516-01 ( I don't know its old)
Zyxel 642M-11
Zyxel 645 ( you know this one )

Even though the Westells are old, and don't always have a lot of features there connections are rock solid. |

Too many variables to call one "best" but this new Westell is on the mind of many folks looking for the breakthrough needed for noisy or long lines: »New Model: Westell 2200 DSL Modem
It seems to be about the biggest jump in years in DSL technology but availbility is just now being determined.
Things to watch out for includes compatibility with your system and listening to those with short, clean, DSL lines where anything works great. I find someone comparing apples and apples is rare (like an array of different modems on the SAME line over time).

DSL went live on Saturday Night ? Just before midnight.. seems odd the dsl light would go on during a weekend but i am happy  !
1536/672 @ 10.5/5. on a Westell 2100 a90-210030-04
Wonder if I should get a Zyxel 643 to boost my line up a few dbs...? and then maybe i will be able to sync at 1536/768 ? after loss and everything I am shooting for about 15 kilobytes more a sec by a modem switch.
What does everyone think? Or maybe a different modem ?

| I've been trying to understand modem performance - good data under the same apples/apples conditions is rare. I also suspect a form of matching goes on - that is, certain brands (modem/DSLAMs) probably have their own "best" matchups.
That said, we all have opinions and mine is that ZyXEL needed the Alcatel firmware update to come on par with the Westell 2100 series. In other words, you have a setup I'm not sure ZyXEL would match. If you do get some comparisons please let us know.
If published numbers are an indication the first real leap is being done on the Westell 2200 series which is now coming out at some ISPs. I'd watch for it. |

I was an 'early adopter' for DSL in my area when Bell Atlantic rolled it out. They sent me a Westell, which is still my modem of choice. I still have it, and it still works great. It seems to be a lot more forgiving of crappy line conditions, and consistently gets better upload speeds than the Zyxel. The downside is that it isn't as configurable as the Zyxell. I've had other modems, which are all now made into attractive looking high tech desk clocks, nightlights or lamps. IMO, Zyxell and Westell are the best from my experience.

Even though I got a 645M with my adsl order, I purchased a 643. Really, really happy with it. Updated the firmware, line quality improved and my line has been solid.

It's nice that you show the sync ratings but another IMPORTANT factor is what are the modems showing for db readings. The 645M might sync higher then a 643 but who has better noise margins.
Sync and noise are both importand and you should always look at them together. |

What DSL service do you have? Also, is that with pppoe or ethernet bridge?

You could try to upgrade the firmware - I was able to upgrade one recently (not FF.2) but FF.0 to EK.4 level
