DJ License in NY

I got my DJ License and I'm 17, but I was told I can't drive. That's pretty stupid. What would happen if I got caught driving alone or with a friend who doesn't have a license?

Well since you can't possibly be insured if you don't have a Class D license, you can be arrested and even charged with stealing the car, driving without insurance, driving without a license, etc. They can ban you from driving until you are 18 or 21 or whatever the judge decides.

I've got a good idea though... DON'T DO IT. It's stupid and can get you in so much crap if you get caught.

However, since you started this post and seem eager to drive, you probably won't listen to my advice anyway... so just stay away from me while driving.

You can not drive in New York City with junior license. Did you look at this sheet? However, you can convert you DJ license to a regular D at 17 if you take a DMV-approved course:

"If you are age 17, you are eligible for a "senior" driver license if you have a junior driver license and have completed a state-approved high school or college driver education course. To convert your junior license to a senior license, bring the Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285) that you received from your instructor and your junior license to any motor vehicle office. You must surrender your certificate and junior license to receive the senior license. If you do not convert your junior license to a senior license, you are subject to the restrictions for junior drivers until you are 18 years old, even if you carry the Student Certificate of Completion with you. If you have a junior learner permit, you may bring the Student Certificate of Completion to the road test and give it to the license examiner. Upon passage of the road test, you will automatically receive a senior license when you are eligible (age 17)."

Otherwise, wait!

I think that's kinda harsh, I doubt I'll get arrested for just driving with a DJ License. I know I can't get insurance for the car, but the car is insured anyway because it's my dads. What's the point of receiving a license at 17 if you can't drive?

Doesn't that cost like $400?

It would be bad enough if you out of town but...i f you get caught, the judge is going to wonder how you could live in the city and not know your license isn't valid here.

Your Dad's car may be insured but it's probably not insured for an under-aged driver. If they find out your Dad's insurance rates could skyrocket, or the insurance company could refuse to renew his policy.

Junior licenses are really intended for teenagers who live in rural areas and need transportation to get to school and other places where there's no public transportation. That's one of the reasons why it doesn't allow you to drive at night.

Couldn't I just say I didn't know I can't drive, my road test examiner could've forgot or something. Do you know of anyone that got caught driving with a DJ Lincense and got arrested or whatever?

Yes, driver's ed courses cost a bundle.

Don't drive without a valid license. It's not worth it. Why are you so eager to drive on your own? Is it just to impress your friends? Do you actually have a need to drive?

Yup, friend of mine at school... he now can't drive or get his license for 3 years.

What's it worth to you?

weiyin See Profile brings up a great point... why are you in such a rush to drive? You gotta realize its not a huge immediate thing. If you're trying to impress friends, it's stupid.

Just take drivers ed, and take the road test as soon as possible. Don't screw it all up by getting busted.

Doesn't matter what you say. Everyone is guilty in traffic court

Wait, I already PASSED my road test. And I don't want to drive to impress my friends, but a lot of times I want to drive somewhere and I can't because no one can drive me.

Can I drive with someone who has their license?

No, you passed the DJ Permit test. If you passed your road test (the one with the Motor Vehicles guy next to you) you would have a Class D license and be able to drive and you wouldn't have made this thread.

I'm 17, and have DJ license too, and I drive with it everyday(in NYC). Also I went to my local police station and asked the cop if I could drive on this kind of license and he looked at me as if I was stupid and said "It's a license isn't it?". I don't think that cops care that much if it's a DJ or D

To get a license no matter if its class D or DJ you have to pass the road test. I took the road test half a year ago (I was 16) and got DJ license. If you take the road test when you are younger than 18 then you are going to get a DJ license, otherwise you're getting a D

Wrong, I took my ROAD TEST with the DMV person next to me and passed, and I have a DJ License.

You drive alone or with somone? My examiner from the road test told me I'm not allowed to drive until I'm 18, not even with a parent.

I drive alone. My examiner told me the same thing that he told you. All the people that I know with DJ licenses are driving with them without any problems.

Well it's wrong. You cannot drive within the NYC limits with a DJ license unless it's from 9AM to 5PM and you are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or Drivers ED teacher and have a car with dual brakes (passenger side brake).

said by NYS DMV:

REGIONAL RESTRICTIONS FOR A JUNIOR PERMIT After September 1, 2003:

New York City (5 Boroughs)

9 AM - 5 PM

Under immediate supervision of:
1. Parent
2. Guardian
3. Person "in loco parentis"
4. Driver Education Teacher
5. Driving School Instructor

The person above must be at least age 21 and have a license valid for the vehicle being driven.

Vehicle must have dual controls (dual brakes).

9 PM - 5 AM

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES
So what you are doing is quite illegal.
