 | From Northpoint dsl to no dsl How can northpoint be the only dsl provider that could be used at my house. I can't even get qwest to my house. How is it determined which service works and which service does not? Now I have no broadband connection, just dial up. |

The restrictions may be now that you are to far for ADSL (which the ILEC usually provides) and no other CLECs have equipment there available. But rest assured I have inside information that ATT plans on up and running starting August 1st in some parts of the country and your part of the country by the end of the yr. -- Matthew Ex-Northpoint, Qwest, Covad OSP Network Technician |

You still might have options:
1.) You could always go with StarBand two-way satellite. Not very good for gaming, but for downloading it blows dialup away.
2.) Fixed wireless is gaining steam. You might get lucky and live in the service radius of sprint or one of the smaller companies.
3.) The low earth orbit (LEO) satellites should be up in the next year or so. No latency like the current generation of birds in geostationary orbit.
4.) Of course if you could get cable, you probably wouldn't be here. Cable companies are still expanding their service areas.
5.) SBC's Project Pronto is moving DSL farther out every day. If you bug PacBell, you might be able to find out about their plans for your area.
6.) You should be able to get IDSL, which is still better than dialup. I think someone is jerking your chain about availability.
7.) You could always get a dedicated line. T1's have come way down in price, and I have seen frame relay solutions as low as a few hundred per month. It won't go down, and if it does they will fix it fast.
If I were you, I would bug various ISPs about getting IDSL. If that fails, get StarBand and wait for something better to come along, as it surely will.

 | Would that be LEO like Motorola's Iridium? We've heard that one before, *sigh*. |
|
 | Iridium wasn't really meant to handle data. There's a new generation of LEO's supposed to be launched this year. The company is partly owned by Bill Gates. I think it's called teledesic.

Hmm.. I'll go for 64mb/2mb LEO any day! I'll sign a contract in a minute... after I see someone else's story. -- -M Got Moose? Go Pens. irc://irc.dal.net/#dslreports |
