Northpoint DSL went down in Brooklyn 5/1

My Northpoint DSL finally went down yesterday during the day. Had a connection in the AM; haven't had one since I came home from work yesterday. Located in Brooklyn, NY; ZIP 11222.
There must have been something to the rumors of a 30 day reprieve for the NYC area. I had a good DSL connection (no downtime) through the month of April.

i'm in 11222 as well. i guess my line would have been up with northpoint just as long as yours. verizon arrived without notice from ISP(megapath) and did the hotcut. the service is down at half the speed from 784kbs to 416kbs but i'm back online at least.

what IPS are you with?

you would have to contact your ISP(who is it?). your ISP in turn contacts Rhythms/Covad/NewEdge(or whatever your ISP wants you to switch to). Rhythms/Covad/NewEdge will then contact Verizon and they send a guy to your place to install a new circuit. it is not a real "hotcut" since they install a new circuit. they could theoretically use your existing circuit and plug it into the equipment at the phone company's central office. i don't have a clue why they go with a fresh circuit.

ergo: call your ISP. you cannot do anything by yourself about it.

keep us posted about your line!

heyhey, free service for such a long time! lucky you. i didn't know they had still "forgotten" lines up'n'running. you didn't pay for the last few month, did you?

you could only sign up with an ISP an start the process all over again, i'm sorry to say.

roadrunner, the cable company made their highspeed internet service available in brooklyn. you might be lucky and be able to get their service. i'm in 11222 and will hopefully be able to get roadrunner this summer. cable installation takes only 2 days in average, is much cheaper and faster than dsl.

step 1:
check the availability of cable highspeed service on the roadrunner web site and sign up in case you can get it.

step 2:
pick one of the ISPs offering DSL and start the process of DSL installation again.

inyc s**ks according to my neighbor. everything is fine as long as the service is up - but you shouldn't put yourself at the mercy of their horrible tech support.

i don't know anybody with idsl's service in brooklyn.

i use megapath.net. they are usually very helpful and they give you always at least 95% of the line speed. they have a bit stress though due to the northpoint issue. they have to transition all their users.

acedsl.com has some great offers in our neighborhood, but they suffer limited capacity for new signups because of lovable verizon. worth a try.

speakeasy.net is pretty good too if you can get it.

if money isn't an issue: get a T1 and leave this DSL stuff alone. it will get worse over the next few months. the ISPs selling DSL are reselling the service from Rhythms/Covad/NewEdge. All three are in financial troubles and you might face the same situation we saw with northpoint in the near future. T1 service can be had for about $600 a month.

Adrian,

Thanks for being such a nice "mentor" in this frustrating time...

T1 is a little T-oo much for me now...

when you say that inyc is okay if it's up and bad to deal with tech when it's donw.. same was true for northopint/flashcom... but once it finally got up and running.. notheing ever happened... so i wiuld assume that they are stable? okay i know.. cant make any assumptions at this point.

my priority is to be up and running asap.. i dont care about the rest.. so i dont know who to go with... inyc or dslii i will contact the others you sugessted.. but i cant "sign" up with them all and wait to see who delivers first? can I.. otherwise i get screwed up with charges and stuf...

RR and Optimum are not available here yet... and re" northpoint service on the forgoten lines, yes.. i was lucky... never paid them anything... but it was more than reasonable, given that it took me 10 months to get my service up... arghh frustrating.....

megapath... they only have voice mail... i could not talk to a rep live to signup.. unless i had the wrong phone... (877-634-2728) i did leave them a message sking for a callback...

later, and thanks (now on 56 and suffering!)

...i feel with you. loosing dsl is bitter.

sdsl as provided by the funny three (rhythms, covad, newedge) takes time. actually the same time with most providers. your new ISP has to send a request to them and they order a circuit from the oh so slow and unpredictable verizon. sdsl needs an extra phone line just for the DSL service.

adsl is partially provided over your existing phone line and can be faster because it doesn't involve verizon. some providers install an extra line for adsl as well. your phone line is capable of carrying voice and data traffic at the same time. the ISP just adds dsl service to your existing voice line.
they send you a new dsl modem and a splitter. you plug the splitter into your phone box and the two outputs connect to your phone and to the modem.

acedsl.com provides this service. they are a local isp. heyhey, you could walk into their office to complain if something goes wrong .

the other big provider working this way is earthlink.

acelink provides static routable ip addresses, which is nice if you want to run an FTP server or use video conferencing often.

earthlink uses pppoe. a kind of dialup over ethernet. you'll have a different ip every time you connect. it works fine for mac, linux and mac. i don't know about beos. the service is pretty good, but it's not "business class" when it comes to guaranteed download speed and up-time. it is just $50 a month. it takes 2 to 4 weeks to get their service up and running, which is fast given the thousands of dsl users waiting in line for new circuits to restore sdsl service. you would sign up on their web site. they send you a package with a cd, the splitter, an user's guide and the modem. you do the installation yourself. it's easy and take less than 2 minutes. after that you wait that your modem LED turns green and that's it.

i guess i would go with earthlink in case my dsl service with megapath/rhythms goes down again. they are big, they are here to stay, you don't need to wait for verizon installation and hey, what mistake could you make - it's just $50

good luck!
