What about a hardware/software combo?
I use Zone Alarm Pro and a 3Com hardware firewall.

How is everyone? I have made it back to the states now, and hope that everyone is doing great!

I have a linksys router/switch. I used to use Zone Alarm. but I thought the ZA was causing DHCP conflicts so I turned it off. How do you use them together?

Hey, I just installed Tiny Personal Firewall on one of my Windows machines. It seems pretty good, application filtering as well as Packet filtering (which is similar to that of IPChains/IPTables that my Linux machine uses).

I'd like to try some sort of hardware firewall. I heard it does Packet Filtering as well!!!

Overall, Tiny is a pretty good piece of software... and most importantly, it's free!!!

I just got my new machine and a new dsl line to go with it. After realizing that I would have a permanent ip (or at least 3 to 4) I did my research and chose BlackICE, and Mcafee for the bugs. I ran BlackICE through every test I could, It passed them all. I also caught 2 viruses in 2 downloads, but mcafee stopped them both. one was a trojan, i forget the other, then someone tried to probe my ports to see if I had that SubSeven trojan. I tried zonealarm, I just didn't like it. I assume its so popular because its so simple. like aol i guess. (yeesh) But I've just realized something:

Blackice doesnt stop outgoing traffic, so if you already had a trojan before you installed it, you're screwed. I may go back to Conceal for this reason.

xzone, Welcome to the security forum. Feel free to start a thread and explain the questions or the problems you are having setting them up and I'm sure you'll find a lot of people here who will be glad to help you out. That's what this forum is all about.

For what it's worth:

"I took a lot of grief after my LeakTest utility cut right through BlackICE Defender. Network ICE told everyone that LeakTest was "being allowed through" because it was a completely benign Trojan. I knew that was a load of bull (and they must have too), but it didn't really matter to me, and I had no affirmative means of proving otherwise.

Well . . . I have that now, and so do you.

I performed one final test: As I had with ZoneAlarm, I attempted to connect to the Sub7Server Trojan running inside the "Sitting Duck" machine on the IP and listening port number the Trojan was advertising all over the Internet . . . and it worked perfectly. I received Sub7's "PWD" prompt asking me to login.

Anyone want an "only used once"
copy of BlackICE Defender?
I certainly have no use for it."

Re: Firewall Poll

Since I got RT314 ZA log has not picked up anything except when I added webwasher. Not one thing.

Before the router ZA log had 56K worth of text in 2 months.

Makes me want to stop using ZA and have 1 less thing in my sys tray.
But just cause she hasn't gotten pregnant yet doesn't mean you can stop using......

Since I have gotten my router and added intense filters I have not had any hits at all on my Tiny PF. However, still get hits going out from new applications and junk so I leave Tiny right where it is.

Re: How About --

I don't understand why I just got an e-mil notification about this
- the mail must be slow
Anyway i Must not have responded.

- I wasn't advocating the use of no firewall
I just thought that a poll
That asks "What firewall do you use:'
should include that as an option.

Any idea when that update was put out BlitzenZues ? .
I can not understand how i managed to miss that update as LiveUpdate is configured to check for new virus/firewall updates every 7 days .
I'm not BlitzenZues, but the update came out early this year, version 2.55.50 You would know if you installed it as it removes all existing application rules and you have make new ones that are secured by the SHA1 hash check. If you are running version 1.0 I don't think they have come out with an update yet. They talked about one, but I have not heard of it being released.

Time to change my vote from ZAP to Conseal.

With all the recent issues concerning ZAP it gave me the excuse to try other products. IMHO, Conseal is a well balanced firewall that doesnt seem to be getting much respect. The rules based protocol gives the experienced user flexibility and the available 'pre-defined' rules package(s) allows the novice user a chance to experience and learn how rules based works.

I was using zone alarm up until 28 days ago. I felt very confident with it. However, I found one I like much better as it is more effective I believe in informing me about what is actually going on when I am attacked. It also gives me more options on how to deal with it if I feel the need to. It will also allow you to report any hacker attacks directly to "hacker watch" where the keep a list of all these hacker I.P.'s and test them themselves. It allows me to perform an immediate trace on the IP.

I have found that in the last month I have been receiving 5 to 10 certified attacks per day and all are blocked, traced and reported. About 99% of these attempts are originating out of China, Korea and Taiwan as well as a few from France and S. America. I can put an immediate block on these I.P.'s or string of I.P.'s and I feel very secure.

You can get a 30 day free trial on all of there software. I suggest you give it a try at: »www.neoworx.com/

Just wondering. Do you people running software based *firewalls* really feel secure? BID, ZAP, Tiny, Conseal et al. There is a difference between an intrusion detection system and a firewall.
So your BID or ZA log shows an attack or scan...great! Now what are you going to do about it?

There has been lots of discussion on this topic before, but BID is not a firewall. It will only tell you that you have been probed. ZA will not only tell you that you have been probed, but it will also tell you if something that you have not permitted to do so tries to call home/escape on its own. I am not sure what you are asking re:"Now what are you going to do about it?" That would all depend upon what occurred, wouldn't it, as well as what you were running? Seems to me that a decision abut what to do would be made on an individual basis. Or, are you asking what you should do, and in that case, one would need to have a specific question/incident to relate to, IMO.
