| What does that mean? >>> As this anonymous vendor (waiting on fiber deployment contracts) points out, each bell has their own opinions on the technology. "BellSouth's view is they want a competitor to Marconi in the fiber-to-the-curb business......"
Can anyone translate this into English? I'm particularly referring tho the phrase, "to Marconi in".

 | Marconi is a British company that makes products associated with fiber among other things. |

| reply to timcuth I'll take a stab at it. I work for Marconi. We make FTTC equipment. Bellsouth would like to have other vendors is the field to offer us some competition. Now granted, I don't work for that division of Marconi, but this is what I've picked up from talking to people here. Of course, I've yet to hear of any large scale deployment plans of our products (or anyone else) by any of the ILEC's, which is irritating. The beg the FCC for rule changes, and then still refuse to actually do anything. Oh, and as far as SBC's balance sheet goes. I've heard (from SBC employees I know) that part of the cash flow issue with SBC was due to them spending big $$$ to get into the Long Distance business and it hasn't made them very much money. |

It simply means they want someone else to do it first.
Marconi started wireless telegraphy. Marconi built this system from the ground up, took all the start-up risks. for many years a radio operators were trained by the Marconi Telegraph Company and these operators were then known as a Marconi Boys. It was a Marconi Boy operating the "Marconi" on the Titanic. When all the risks where taken then other companies moved in on the business. Bellsouth doesn't want to spend it's capital to build such a system. But you can bet your sweet life that once it is installed they will try to purchase the fiber thus laid at fire sale prices. -- Low Brass & Irish Terriers rule, and I love the warm glow of a vacuum tube in the morning
