Awwwww $2000 per home

Why don't these communication companies go to the government? Why the hell are we paying the taxes on our phone line and DSL service for??? And Verizon has no excuse they took money from the State of Pennsylvania to fiber most of PA.

Yeah... in fact, since we all pay taxes on our gasoline, why not have the government give us all cars too... Since we all pay taxes on our property, the government should give us each a new house too!

What does paying taxes on a service have to do with the government being responsible to give each user of that service a related asset?

Well Boogie you going overboard now.
Property taxes most of it goes for the schools for hopefully better schools, the rest goes to local town for services. Gasoline tax goes for taking care of roads I hope. And the Communication taxes should be for phone and broadband things. So thats my thinking the money in taxes is and should be spent wisely to finally bring fiber to the home. So the communication tax money should help rebuild the infrastructure.

Well, the reality is that state telecom taxes are really sales tax. Federal excise taxes were enacted in 1898 to fund the Spanish American War.

Further, there has not been any governmental investment in telecom- it's always been a private industry- not public.

Boogie,
Well the Spanish American war is over of course but I guess the government doesn't think so but thats another topic.
If we wait for private industry to invest in telecom it will take a long time for sure. There is no agreement on how to do things, (worries of Telecoms own finances), and there is no organizational "committee" made of private industry to help cultivate fiber to the home or where the money should come from to pay the "$2000". I still think government should fork over some money for this since we been paying taxes for a long time.

Translation: Why can't these companies go to the government (who has over spent all of the tax money they took from us already) and urge the government to take more of our taxes (while skimming of a certain percentage for management, collection and distribution of said funds) so that we can lay a fiber infrastructure to get 100megabits to my aunts house so she can download her AOL e-mail 2000 times faster than she does now.

Yes, the government has a long history of wisely spending taxpayer money.

The market on the other hand, will invest/spend money when the demand is great enough.

The government says, " everyone must invest regardless of the risk ".

The market says, " anyone who wishes to take the risk and share in the reward is welcome ".

I prefer to invest without a gun pointed at my family.

Maybe so, but the telecom industry (Bell actually) was given enough government support (i.e. a monopoly) that they were able to build out their network with no fear of losing money. All things considered the government did step in and give Ma' Bell enough clout to become who they are now.

id say let the government step in, it worked for the TVA. heck the TVA still exists they could just get into the bandwidth business.
