I thought I read somewhere that it was (25???), but it must have been FUD. It is limited in that you cannot install MSSQL on it - only MSDE, which does have a concurrent connection limit of 5 or 10. It also doesn't include ICF, so it is open to the Internet (upgrade incentive).

I use 2003 Web Edition on my laptop for developing. I setup MSDNS on it and created a .dev TLD for developing, so each project is its own domain - foo.dev, bar.dev, quux.dev, etc. Kind of weird having 50 sites running on my laptop ;) MSDE for local developing isn't that bad, but you cannot install MSSQL Enterprise Manager client tools either, so that is a major PITA. I tried NTSwitch to try to bypass this but it didn't work.

The $400 price for web edition is nice, but I'd recommend 2003 SBS - 2003 Std, SQL 2000 and Exchange 2000 for under $900 IIRC - cheaper than 2000SBS by a few hundred dollars.

There is a drawback in that you are not supposed to run anything but web applications and such off of it. You don't need client licences or anything, but supposedly running a database server on it would be in violation. (or maybe it's only a violation if you run mssql?) At any rate, what I do (for the people I host) is set up a web box for them, and I have a seperate db server. That way, you're 100% legal and separating them makes sense anyway. I have a MSSQL and a MySQL database box. You're right about hosting though... shared hosting is much cheaper with linux solutions. I was mostly referring to the cost of basic hosting though. You can get unix hosting cheaper than MS hosting generally (for obvious reasons).

I agree with listing asp.net projects here, or any language for that matter (even ColdFusion ;-)), as long as they fit the CMS/Forum "bill" :)

I haven't used DotNetNuke yet. Never heard of the Rainbow Portal. It's Contact and Discussion modules look similar to iBuySpy's.

This forum is mostly OSS language oriented - PHP, Perl, Python, etc. There are more PHP/MySQL users (and questions) than ASP.NET and ASP. I use ASP.NET everyday but I guess I know it enough not to have to ask questions. Either that or I know how to STFW and RTFM ;)

Bordering on ;-). I think theres at least a few of us that post in ATU (All Things Unix) as well.

Honestly though, I don't think there are enough of us here that use .NET that we would know of any forums. Think about how many .NET questions you have seen in the last week--or month even, compared to PHP or even Perl. Heck, I think there are more Python related question ;-)

My best guess is that we often see unix php-enabled servers recommended because most of us that post here also seem to be cheap ;-)

The .NET additions are wholeheartedly welcomed here however :)

It's difficult finding anything open source or free with CF. From my experience, CF is usually reserved for use in companies due to the cost of it (among other reasons). You have as much luck finding quality CF FAQ's, personal blog sites, help sites and such.

You use it to run a website basically. So you don't have to do the coding yourself. It dynamically addresses issues that you may have to do by hand without it, like making pages for articles, coding a comments section.

You see CMSes everywhere. DSLR has a particularly expansive CMS.
