Re: Comcast Account Suspended for going over "limit"

fiatlux,
I am not entirely sure how much I downloaded between when I received the letter and when I was monitored. The representative said they monitored my bandwidth from a few days after I received the letter and they suspended me from that amount. I've checked my newsgroup account logs but they look like they're inaccurate. It has back to August 30th with a sum of about 2 gb. However, I'd guess that I downloaded 2 to 3 gb a day. I've been out of space a lot and I burn 1 dvd-r a day, so it probably wouldn't exceed that for only file downloads.

Re: Comcast Account Suspended for going over "limi

"Since I was cut off on the 12th of this month, I do not believe that I have downloaded more than 30 gb max"

They probably aren't taking this month into account. It takes awhile to process and 12 days into september is probably about right. People seem to be recieving the letters about 15-20 days into the month after the one they transfered "too much" in, minus the days it takes snail mail to reach people they probably send them out about the 12th. You didn't have to wait for the mail it was an instant disconnect.

I can understand why they're doing this especially on overloaded nodes. People compare Cable to DSL all the time but they are completely different. DSL you are connected to a CO and so is everyone in the area while Cable you have all these nodes that carry a mere 400 customers so it costs cable companies a ton more resources to up keep all these nodes and all these neiborhoods, DSL just has to up keep 1 central office. If the CO has a problem they don't have to send people out to find it, they already know where it is and people are already there.

I wonder is that applies to a employee of Comcast?;)

Sure hope not. I was just inquiring to my supervisor about getting 2 Pro packs for my home.

Hey bob0000 do you know what the speed is of that deicated line? 195 per month sounds like 1.5 down and 256 up dedicated.

The only way Comcast is going to give a straight answer on the cap is when they are taken to court for these BS practices of theirs.

And even then, I'm sure it can be "fixed" with some "creative accounting."

Re: Comcast Account Suspended for going over "limit"

Thanks for the reply Bob0000. You said they said cut back by half? That would put me back to about 20 GB a month then. Ugh, this sucks. Time to look at DSL.

Though I wonder if we'd have a higher cap if we moved to Pro? Any gold tier users out there who have received this letter?

Nothing to worry about Makoa these are people who download in the 100's of gigs per month.

"The only way Comcast is going to give a straight answer on the cap is when they are taken to court for these BS practices of theirs."

They aren't fining anyone additional money, they are simply sending a letter out to users who consume huge amounts of bandwidth. If the user doesn't cut his usage then they disconnect their service as another warning and reactivate it upon contacting them. If they post a limit of say 100 gb then users will download to just under that limit and it might actually encourage users to download a little more just because they know they can. Anyone that doesn't like this tactic don't have to use Comcast. It's not a court matter.

What i think they should do is take the regular silver package give it a 25-30 gig limit and give pro a 150 gig limit so if you want to download more you will have to pay more. Root out the bandwidth hogs only paying $45/month.

fiatlux

@65.193.x.x

I don't mind paying more as I'm obviously consuming more resources. I do mind not knowing what the download limit is. I'm all worried about my usage now. Which is not what I want from my ISP.

It will be interesting to see if any gold users get the letter. If not, I'll be upgrading to Pro. If they get letters as well, I'm off to DSL.

Dude you need to read up on this some more. At 40 gigs you are completely fine, this letter is only making it's way to people who download 100's gigs a month. He said he downloaded around 30 gigs in just the first 12 days of September and he says that was a lower number then usual because he ran out of hard drive space. So normally he may download 60 gigs in that time so that could put him in the 150-200 gig range. Half for him is still twice as much as you. You have nothing to worry about.

Cancel your service

I cancelled my service last week after getting a warning letter also, same treatment about refusal to specify what the limits are. Today they called me up and asked me why I cancelled, I told them "bandwidth usage restrictions". They tried to offer the cable modem service for $15/month, I told them no.

The dsl folks tell me that a lot of people are calling in as former comcast customers. The dsl folks claim they support foreign exchanges now. Great deal with bundling (dsl, local, and long distance service) all together.

Well if the unknown cap was that low they would post it like Cox has posted a cap because too many people would be hitting it. As it is we know it's probably somewhere above 150 GB. Some users have claimed they only download 70-100 gb a month but they use alot of words such as probably and maybe so they don't really know, they're clearly just guessing. Without a reliable bandwidth meter they wouldn't know. And i've a few bandwidth hogs friends who run dumeter and they download over 100 gig consistently, one of them hit 123 gb in july. They've yet to recieve a letter.

Yea DSL is a lot cheaper to run and maintain which is why they allow users to get away with so much more and restrict them hardly at all. Too bad it's not more widly available and isn't usually as fast as Cable. Some markets have a lot faster speeds others it's just a little slower and in qwest markets still only have 256 or 640 Kbps speeds.

Re: Comcast Account Suspended for going over "limit"

I'm a heavy user and since January I have been keeping track of how much I download. I have averaged 80 GB a month (on the low end I downloaded about 40 GB, on the high end 100 GB). Before I started keeping track, I would have guessed I averaged 30 - 40 GB a month (obviously I was way off). I have not received a letter. I'm guessing the people who have received letters are probably downloading twice as much as they think.

But I'm still worried about this and I'm starting to shop around for DSL. I'm not going to switch until Comcast actually reveals what the cap is going to be (if there will be one at all) or until I receive a "hog" letter. I do not plan to change my usage habits at all for the moment. If they can come up with an affordable plan for someone like me, I'll stick with them. If not, I'll leave. Simple as that.

Can you guys imagine renting a car with unlimited mileage and being told you went over the limit when you go to return it. Or even better, they install a device that cuts the car off at some point, but no one knows what that point is? I consider this questionable at best but they know we do not have the bucks to take them to court nor can we claim loss of revenue since these are residential class services. Until they set a limit???

Most services have a limit nowadays, and those that do not have plans on implementing one at some time.

It sounds like one of the variants of Comcast Workplace, which is capped at 3500/384. ref: »work.comcast.net/workplace.asp

In all likelihood, it wouldn't take much digging to find that, for $195/month, one's line is not as dedicated as the sales rep would like one to believe.

Wow - I wish that was the way it was growing up!

I think he doesn't know how he's abusing the service. He cannot get any specific answer from Comcast.

Sounds like many of you are pushing for a hard limit:) I am sure most would not like a hard limit. I have no problem with a well, I guess you could say a fuzzy limit?

If you say, download 60+ gigs in one month and then 20 the next month, they wouldn't bother you. If you download 60+ gigs on a regular basis, then I guess you are going to get a letter. I know a few people who have downloaded 50+ gigs in one month and have not got a letter, but they don't do this constantly. A hard limit would suck.

It's the constant downloading they are looking to stop, people who are way above all users and are effecting others, which is different in many locations since some areas are able to handle more load than others. I bet it's also a good way to find people sharing connections with multiple neighbors in places like apartment buildings.

You would all complain if a few 3gb a day downloaders were on your node, and your connection dropped in half.

Flame away, but I don't want a hard limit. I'll stick with comcast's soft limit, they issue a letter before they cut you off, so you have the chance to make changes. As strange as it sounds a Comcast monitored cap is Much better than say a hard 30gb cap.
