If Verisign owns the root DNS servers, they pretty much own the Internet. So, instead of the DNS servers being part of an independant worldwide infrastructure, they are simply a greedy company "letting us use" their servers. And since they are their servers, they can do what ever they want to do no matter what anyone says.
