OHnetguyPremium join:2003-01-16 Toronto, OH | 4416/384 sync but only 1.5/384 speeds Hello,
We have a customer (actually an employee) whose account we had boosted up to the up-to-6 mbit/384 package.
They are maintaining a constant high speed sync but are not able to downoad anything over about 150 K/sec. Other than changing the sync in the redbacks, is there something else that SBC would need to do (such as remove some rate/policy limiting in the redback) to allow our customer to actually download at these speeds?
We currently have a full ATM DS3 to ASI (averages about 350 kbit usage). We have a redback SMS 500. We do not impose any policy/rate limiting on a customer at this time (at least our customer is on no such limiting profile). We have only a few customers on DSL right now and have 155 Mbit (averages less than 15% usage) to the Internet.
This person tries all of the speedtests and none of them deliver over about 150 KB/sec download... This person also attempts to retrieve files directly from servers at our location (effectively they have full bandwidth available to them) and still does not get download rates any higher than he had gotten with the 1.5/128 package.
Below is their DSL stats: DSL Statistics: Type : ALC MULTI-MODE CP Datapump HW Rev : ff Datapump FW Rev : 3.9.16 Datapump Vendor ID : ffff Current Status : LINK UP Operating Mode : G.DMT Data Path : Fast Downstream Upstream Current Rate : 4416 Kbps 384 Kbps Maximum Rate : 4460 Kbps 738 Kbps Noise Margin : 8.5 dB 16.0 dB Attenuation : 58.0 dB 31.5 dB Out Power : 20.0 dB 8.0 dB
Near Far FEC Counts Fast : 0 0 CRC Counts Fast : 11 0 HEC Counts Fast : 7 0
Is there a possibility that something else needs changed at ASI to facilitate this person getting the download speeds that they are synced at? They have done the tweaks. They are using a Netopia Cayman router.
I can IM somebody the DSL TN if they can take a look at it.
Thanks,
Mike |

done... and I also made some special notes in that IM that would be of importance to you. I realize what the end result may be.
Also thanks for testing that other one I had IMd you a while back - that guy is working fine now that he replaced his jack.
Thanks

OHnetguyPremium join:2003-01-16 Toronto, OH | Well, what ended up happening is that the profile was switched back to 1536/128 - this is what I see now when it syncs up.
I'm wondering how you all are able to tell that the distance is too long for that speed and that the download capacity is close to 100% and noise is high? What are the giveaways? ( I guess part of that is for satasi since I am not aware that he had seen any statistics ). ADSL Guy sent me the statistics from the redback - is that what you were looking at also satasi? Seems to me that what I had posted here in the forum didn't really reveal enough information to determine that distance was too far unless you were going by attenuation alone.
Any chance somebody could try the higher profile again to see if maybe it was just a case where it was uncapped but the profile limited it on download - that is assuming that the profile rate limits separately from whatever sets the actual sync rate cap. Like I said, it consistently synced up higher when they originally changed the profile - I just didn't see a faster download speed.
Thanks,
Mike |

 RadioDoc58ef2c0Premium,ExMod 2000-03 join:2000-05-11 | Download capacity (from above) is 99%: [Current Rate : 4416 Kbps]/[Maximum Rate : 4460 Kbps]. You generally don't want that above about 85-90%.
Noise margin is low at 8.5 dB, which means that the desired signal is only 8.5 dB above the noise, which implies that noise level is high compared to the DSL signal. 6 dB is considered the minimum. |

OHnetguyPremium join:2003-01-16 Toronto, OH | RadioDoc: Very informative. Thanks for the heads up on that. I'll keep that in mind for future assessment of possible upgrades for clients.
djrobx: Now that would be a sweet deal Wonder (Beach Boy / ADSL Guy) if there are any profiles between the 4000 and the 1500 that it could be set to. We obviously don't have a problem for paying the price of the highest of those profiles even if we have to be locked in somewhat lower...like maybe 3000 or something.
Appreciate all your input!

kmac1Off in new directionsPremium,VIP join:2001-06-07 Port Neches, TX | reply to OHnetguy There are some newer speed caps coming for trouble-shooting use. We don't have them yet, but they're on the way. |

ross96VIP join:2000-11-02 Huntersville, NC | reply to OHnetguy Okay...how come some folks are sync'd at 1536/128 and others at 1536/160?? Which is it?? |

kmac1Off in new directionsPremium,VIP join:2001-06-07 Port Neches, TX | The 1536/128 profile is actually a hard cap, non-rate adaptive profile, whereas the 1536/160 is rate-adaptive.
Pretty soon it will be a bygone, as ASI updates all the DSLAM and RT profiles to new rate-adaptive profiles that are the same in all regions. |
