I can "agree" to fly to the moon by flapping my arms.
I can delay the attempt indefinitely.
How long will they take to actually do what they agreed to do? Verisign has been a bad player for years. You don't get much sleazier than them.
I can say this: my company will need digital certificates in the next 6 months or so.
I GUARANTEE we won't be getting them from Verisign or Thawte.
Why would I trust a corp that broke the public's trust? Why would our customers trust the security provided by Verisign digital certs?

| Re: How long will this take? According to Matt Larson of VeriSign Naming and Directory Services, VeriSign will begin removing the wildcard A records from the .com and .net zones at 2300 UTC Saturday October 4. The former behavior, returning Name Error/RCODE=3 in response to queries to non existent domains, will be in place by 0100 UTC Sunday October 5.
<rant> Today, VeriSign complained:
] We requested an extension from ] ICANN to give more notice to the ] community but were denied.
Am I the only one who finds this humorous? </rant>

No, thousands, perhaps even millions of monitors were sprayed with coffee, tea, soda, and other beverages when this was seen. Lots of people experienced the delight of the aftereffects of blowing carbonated beverages out their noses.
Imagine Saddam Hussein, in the first Gulf War, having requested an extension to the extinguishing of the Kuwaiti oilfield fires he set, to give more time to the downwind recipients of the greasy black oil smoke to prepare for it to cease. Imagine the operators of Chernobyl or Three Mile Island having said that they wanted to delay cleanup efforts in order to give notice to downwind communities so they could prepare for the radiation dispersal to stop.

I'll be the first to admit that I was wiping coffee off of my monitor. It seems tragic that their operations folk are forced to play the part of PR whore. -- *clickity click*

theBOFH join:2003-08-27 Waterbury, CT | Exactly right. Notice was given *after* the fact by a VeriSign employee, between 6 and 9 hours after the .net zone was altered and presumably moments after the .com zone was modified.
] Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2003 19:24:29 -0400 ] ] The wildcard record in the .net zone was ] activated from 10:45AM EDT to 13:30PM EDT. ] The wildcard record in the .com zone is ] being added now.
In fact, to maintain consistency, VeriSign should have restored proper operation to the .com and .net zones 6 to 9 hours *before* ICANN issued their request to terminate SiteFinder. ICANN is being *very* generous in offering 36 or so hours to restore the zones to pre-September 15th state. -- *clickity click*
