Re: [COMCAST] HDTV in Dallas MetroPlex

I live on Frankford between the tollway and George Bush. I still have a "not authorized" message when I turn to Discovery HD Theater. I've had this message since July 2. Comcast reset my box yesterday morning--that failed to work so they did a "supervisor reset" in the evening. All that did was delete my favorites list. They told me to call back this morning if it wasn't on and so I did--the lady told me to wait until today or tomorrow as the channel should be available then. You gotta' love those unsure and very generic messages they give the customers, right?

Anyway, anyone else live in my part of town??

Masterhoss,

Do you have a splitter or other device that may be intercepting two way communication between your cable box and the Comcast office? Not all splitters are two-way compatible.

masterhoss56

@216.52.x.x

No splitter at all. And even if I did, I don't see how all my other HD channels would be viewable but not Discovery HD Theater.

I can currently view:
ABC-HD
CBS-HD
NBC-HD
CBS-HD
FOX-EDTV
StarzHD
ESPNHD
INHD
INHD2

I should have access to:
Discovery HD Theater

I had a filter on my line that kept me from getting just InHD1 and InHD2. But the message on my box was "this channel will be available shortly." The thing that tipped off the tech that it was a filter was that the signal strength on just those two channels was zero if I recall correctly.

masterhoss56

@216.52.x.x

hmm. that's interesting. I live in an apartment. I would like to know exactly what is wrong. I guess I'll have to request for a technician to come out to my place. The only physical split I have within my apartment is in my bedroom for the cable modem and TV. My living room TV is connected to a seperate outlet (but that doesn't mean there's some split behind the walls).

I don't know if I have a line filter though--that's just an odd problem, but if it fixed your situation, maybe it'll fix mine.

(I just wished they'd stop telling me that it's a new channel and that a signal some come to my box tonight or tomorrow morning). And my message does say "not authorized." It definately does not say "this channel will be available shortly"

In your last two posts you state "no splitter at all" and then you say "it splits in the bedroom." If it does in fact split in the bedroom, the splitter may be blocking two way communications, which is required to authorize new channels. Remove the splitter, plug your box directly into the cable, then call 972-445-5555 and follow the prompts to "soft" reset your box.

If that doesn't work, here are a few other things I might try (in this order):

1. Verify that Comcast has you on the right package (that obviously includes Discovery Ch.)
2. Unplug your box for 1 min and plug back in
3. Have Comcast hard reset your box
3. Set up a service call

That's because the split in my bedroom if for the cable modem and the analog cable feed to my TV tuner card inside my computer.

My DVR box is connected to my TV which is in the living room which has its own cable outlet to connect to. Splitting the cable outlet from my bedroom shouldn't have anything to do with the living room, right?

1.) Comcast has me on the correct package
2.) they reset my box and had me unplug the unit from the wall for 30 seconds to recycle the box
3.) if by "hard reset," you mean what the Comcast people call "supervisor reset," then I've tried that too.
4.) Unfortunately, I'm going to have to set up a service call.

The closest I got to actually receiving the channel was last night--for about 30 seconds, my receiver picked up a Dolby Digital bitstream but no sound was generated.

I'm really starting to fall in love with that black screen with the "not authorized" message.

Oh yeah. And if you are still thinking that I need to, for some reason, remove the Comcast-installed split in my bedroom (which, I say again for the 3rd time, IS NOT feeding my DVR unit), I'd be very surprised because I've not had any problem receiving the other HD channels when they went live.

Here in Grapevine we are receiving both InHD and Discover HD. My box did not have to be reset to receive Discovery HD.

I recently upgraded my Motorola HD box to the 6208 and am extremely disappointed with the number of dropouts, freezes and tiling/pixelation. It occurs several times in an hour period and it is very annoying when watching a movie or one of the great specials on DiscoverHD or InHD.

Comcast did send a tech to the house, but he did not seem to know much about the business. He indicated the problem was related to the recent channel lineup change and actually said they were having problems and were working on them, To give them a week or so and see if they went away. They tiling has not gone away.

Interestingly, the tech said Motorola is aware of tiling issues with the 6208 DVRs boxes! I had not hear that one. Does anyone else know if this is true?

I called Comcast again and the next step is for me to change my 6208 and see if that solves the problem. I will exchange when I return home next Wednesday.

I had a similar problem. Is your 6208 box plugged into a surge protector? It should be connected directly to the outlet because it requires more power that the surge protector is not letting it have.

After this fix, I have not had a problem with it. Make sure to do a "soft reset" by calling 972-445-5555.

We had a meeting today and they discussed VOD in the Dallas area. They said that some Beta testing would start to occur sometime in Mid-August but they did not specify an area. They also mentioned that WB-HD is still on the plate to get launched soon but no date has been finalized.

When you say beta testing, how long does that take normally and if everything goes well then how much longer til it's deployed? I had got an email the other day saying the new i-guide would be available in September. Do you think they could be waiting until that is ready or does that have nothing to do with it.

I would make an educated guess and say that the I-guide deployment will have nothing to do with it. As a matter of fact as an insider for Comcast I have heard nothing about the I-guide, but that doesn't mean that nothing is really in the works. I would add to this by saying if all is good after probably 4-6 weeks then VOD should be a full launch, but I honestly think the City of Dallas will be last in the VOD launch.

Kcharg, I am just curious if the Mot. 6412 has been mentioned in any way internally. Will we be getting them this fall? Will they need beta testers? If so I would LOVE to be involved! Like I said, just curious...I am currently using the 6208 and I like it, but the lack of ability to record one show while watching another can be frustrating.... Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Scotty

Well I just received the 6208 on Friday. For the most part is works well. Love the pause while you're watching. And the recording of shows works good too.

I am not experiencing any more tiling than I did before and it does happen occasionally but not too much. Maybe the problem is the location you're in. I am in Lake Highlands in Dallas.

Regarding the quality of the non-digital channels - I agree that the watching them through the HD connection on the back of the TV is not good. I switch over to the analog version of the signal and it is acceptable - not great- but definitely better than trying to keep the input on HD.

KCHARG - your thoughts on this? tks for all of your inside information on this forum.

The 6412 was mentioned at our Company wide meeting last week as to when we should be getting it. They said by the end of the year, I know this is very vague but this came from the big guys mouth. Like all I wish we already had them but patience is a important when dealing with Comcast.
