matt380Dangit, Bobby.Premium join:2002-06-12 Kennesaw, GA | DSL vs. Cable summed up. The above mentioned is the only reason i still have cable and not DSL. I do not desire to have a home tellephone number as my cell phone provides everything i need. I would prefer DSL due to congested cable networks in my area. But, to have DSL, I would have to have the most basic telephone package which is $30 a month. I'd rather save the $30 and deal with the slow connects in the afternoons.
I hope things will change someday and you can purchase DSL seperate from phone service. then, DSL, here I come!! |

$30 is not the most basic pkg. most basic package is a metered line for ~8-14 a month. |

| Yeah tell that to Verizon who then wants more money for other non-services like the so-called regulatory recovery junk fees and the $1.50 a month just to keep your name out of their money tree phone directories.
Screw the telcos and their crap POTS. As for slow connections in the afternoons, I would take my 1.8Mb 24-7 Comcast service over my sub 500kbps (if I'm even that lucky) so-called 1.5Mb Verizon crap I have at my office any day of the week.
And in Kennesaw, GA, all I see in terms of speed is Bellsouth getting SMOKED by Comcast (who BTW just deployed their 3Mb standard service there). »/archive?zip=30152 »/archive?zip=30144
According to DSLR speed tests for the two Kennesaw zip codes, the slowest speed posts from Comcast are DOUBLE that of the fastest from Bellsouth.

 | reply to morbo $29.94 here, for basic dial tone, pay per local call service. I have checked. The rates sound a lot lower, but when you add up all of the fees and taxes, that is what it comes up to. (and the only amount I give a rat's *ss about is what actually comes out of my pocket) -- AMD XP2500+ @2300mhz/ Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 1.04/ 2x 512Mb Kingston HyperX PC3500/ WD 120Gb on serial/ Gainward GF4 4600/ Enermax 465P-VE/Custom water cooler |
|
 | reply to morbo After you factor in taxes and the SBC access fees(federal and state which both end up on SBC's top line in the balance sheet) it's more like $25 for the cheapest 50 call line. |

Speed tests results are fine and dandy, but you must admit that they rarely show the WHOLE picture. Kennesaw is a large, upper-middle class city where everyone has broadband. most of those people do use their connections when the get home from work/school. that puts a terrible strain on the cable networks. but, most of the posted speed results here are from people who use those connections at all times of day, not just during peak hours. there are times my cable drops from ~3.1 to ~800. that, my friend, is a dropoff. i would prefer to have a steady, stable 1.5-2.0 connection over a unreliable 3.0 connection.
»/archive/bellsouth.net
also, after reading the post about the $8 home phone service, i called bellsouth directly. the cheapest plan they had to offer was $17.95.then include the $10 a month regulatory fees and taxes, and that's $30, like i said before. so, my argument stands, i can't wait until bellsouth UNbundles their DSL and home phone service.
man, i love peoples opinions about MY service... [text was edited by author 2003-10-27 17:13:38] |

WOW, whats the point at being given double the download rate if you have download caps? You will just hit your cap twice as fast. As long as cable companies have caps who cares what there download speeds are. SBC for 40 a month has 1.5M down and 384K up. For 30 a month 1.5M down and 256k up. All sbc plans are completely unrestricted in the amount you can download. During the summer I was downloading 17GB a week and uploading about 6GB a week. Why are there no cable users who can claim this? |

| What download caps? You mean the warning letters sent out to people downloading 180-300GB/mo repeatedly? At 17GB a week you aren't even going to be noticed by Comcast. Are you even capable of downloading 180-300GB/mo with your xDSL? [text was edited by author 2003-10-27 18:32:17] |

About YOUR service...so far I haven't see anyone in your franchise posting speeds that you're referring to. You claimed slow speeds during the afternoon but the speed tests of users in your franchise don't support this claim. You can make up any claims you want, but as far as the Kennesaw, GA experience, your claims are unsubstantiated.
And thanks for posting the link, as you can see, you will NEVER see anything even close to 2Mb with bellsouth in your area. Most are in the 1-1.3Mb range while Comcast is in the 3Mb+ range. And to debunk your claims further, Bellsouth seems to be WAY more unstable with a vast number of users in your area seeing speeds below 1Mb.

matt380Dangit, Bobby.Premium join:2002-06-12 Kennesaw, GA | reply to matt380 so now, you're basically telling me that i am lying about the speeds I get at MY house? i appreciate that. otherwise, i wouldn't have been able to tell. you're good. i must admit. from 2500 miles away, you can tell me what my speeds are at any given time of any given day!
you're awesome! you're hired as my new personal computer advisor! |

| Well, if the problem is YOU, don't blame Comcast. If the problem is franchise wide (which it seems it ISN'T) then blame Comcast. You can also claim that the sun rises in the West and from 2500 miles away how would I know it doesn't. All I'm seeing is every speed test for the zip codes of your area are posting at or above caps while those with BellSouth are in the toilet.
It's not that difficult a concept...no one else posting speed tests in your area seems to have this mysterious problem. Perhaps it's a big conspiracy brought upon you by the black helicopter pilots at Comcast to force you over to the sub 1Mb BellSouth services.
And you seem to not have any problems with Comcast in this thread, from earlier today no less, where you sing Comcast's praises. This posted right after you "claimed" to have afternoon slowdowns.

Uh, ooops. You think none of us would notice this...or the fact that you rated Comcast as "They Rock" in your profile? Keep digging that hole of yours.

BellSouth discontinued its residential measured service in Georgia (which also provided some discount on certain intraLATA toll calls) sometime last year -- it's either flat-rate or nothing. I wonder why...

WTF, man? i would just prefer to be serviced by bellsouth rather than comcast. be it thru what i believe to be a better bottom line of customer service, billing and package options, 100+ years in business or just based on marketing/name recognition alone, whatever. i like bellsouth's dsl better than comcast's HSI. end of discussion. |

Seeing as you have trouble being truthful, I'll believe you would rather have bellsouth when you cancel the Comcast service you're so happy with (as per your posts) and get Bellsouth. -- -- Munis Killed the Telco Star -- Powered by Barry McKockenner Racing in association with Jack Mikkokov Motorsports |
