| I guess I just don't understand why all the hostility toward Berkeley? I post stories about how the bells pay phoney companies who claim they're independent to publish "studies" that say what the bells want them to say, and nobody says a thing....
Post something about Berkeley researchers, and they're somehow satan spawn?
I'm just missing the pulse of popular opinion or something. |

| reply to Karl Bode For one, this survey has no real value other than to provide useless statistics. While they are entertaining, they are also inaccurate as I mentioned earlier.

 | Inaccurate how? You've sat and crunched the numbers?
The 800Meg average is spread across the entire world's population, most of whom don't have a PC...... |

| And including people who don't have PCs is beneficial how? That's probably the main reason the stats are so screwed up. I can say on average smoking does not harm a person's health and not include the fact that I involved everyone in the world regardless if they actually smoke or not. That would make as much nonsense as these stats. If they wanted accuracy, they should have started by taking into account only people with Internet access. -- Death Is Irrelevant. |

Information exists in far more diverse forms that digital data that is on the internet. An understanding of that basic fact seems to escape you based on your post.
For example, if I write a page of prose, I have created about a 1kB of data. Hell, Shakespeare in his lifetime probably wrote several HUNDRED MBs of data.

So if the people at Berkeley found a cure for cancer, you would still call them idiots because you disagree with their political beliefs ? Would you then not use the drug if need be because you disagree with politics ?
People, we need to get beyond politics. Politics are a huge waste of time and cause far more harm than good. I've never seen something stop progress and solutions faster than politics. -- Male by birth... Geek by choice. -- The suffered is the learned... |

No and No. Regardless of an organization's political views, if they did something as profound as find a cure to cancer I would acknowledge that. -- Death Is Irrelevant. |

Stats are pretty skewed when you consider they looked at the world's population, most of whom don't have computers....

First, it is true. Limiting it the computers and the internet would then make it a "worthless statistic". Information production is inherently multi-media. Think of the 4GB DVD or LP (record) you own, that's information (although redundant because its based on gigabytes more film, etc).
Secondly, I can not verify Karl's understanding of that concept simply because I am not Karl. -- Male by birth... Geek by choice. -- The suffered is the learned... |

| reply to ArchAngel21x No, I understand it as I actually READ the whole report. I'm just suggesting that PC users likely generate far more data....
You apply that average across a world population that consists of a lot of people working for virtually no money toiling in fields, and how much new information do you think these people create? Text, digital, or otherwise?
Not much.... [text was edited by author 2003-10-29 13:20:01] |

To cap this line off... It is possible to gauge your understanding because of what you posted. You said clearly and distinctly how you understood the article. Karl on the other hand made no such stance. You gave us the information we needed to gauge your understanding, Karl did not.

Even when I lived out there in the late '60's the political activists Berkley where on another planet. The Hard science types where to busy doing hard science to pay any attention to the what these yippies where doing.
