Not entirely... By estimating the amount of data we as a society (globally) create, it shows the level of sophistication and advancement we are at. The more data a society creates, the more advanced it is currently. If you broke it down by country, you would see what I mean.

Interesting point. Just imagine this... All kinds of transmissions are leaking out into space. If and only if there is intelligent life out there. They can use the same hypothesis on us.
