 | Where did DTV's Programming Come From? Let's not forget that without the initial risks taken by the cable-cos, Direct and Dish would not be around to begin with. Ever see any local origination from DTV? In addition, your cable-co is regulated or can be by your local community, where it should be regulated. When a biz is regulated, they will take every rate increase allowed. Only makes sense to me. If not regulated, then marketplace will set the price in time. Drill down deeper and you'll find that, channel per channel, rates have stayed even or have dropped. Name one cable-co that requires a minimum 12 month committment. They are all month to month with no dumping penalties. A-la-carte will never happen with the majority of programmers. If you can't tell your advertisers who they are reaching and a good projection, they don't buy advertising. This is a never-ending discussion that will never be answered. |

It's been quite a while, but I believe I had to commit to 1 year of cable service to get the free installation 10 or 12 years ago. When I got Optimum Online I had a 1 year agreement, but it turned out to be an impediment to Cablevision's price increase strategy, so it's no longer available As for my DirecTV, I'm more than happy to commit to 1 year because it's better than cable. -- Time is an abstract concept invented by carbon based life forms to monitor their constant decay.-Thunderclese |

Without the initial risk taken by Henry Ford, there wouldn't be any cars. Does that mean I can't buy a Mercedes? |

That's FUD.
The 12 month commitment you're referring too is required because you're being GIVEN several hundred dollars worth of equipment for Free (or rebated) and free install and you need a one year contract to offset the cost.
Cable doesn't come in and give you a bunch of expensive equipment, and if you cancel cable, anything they do "lend" you, they demand back! -- "Regulatory capitalism is when companies invest in lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians, instead of plant, people, and customer service." - former FCC Chairman William Kennard (A real FCC Chairman, unlike the current Corporate Spokesperson in the job!) |
