I'm curious what page that is? Not running NAT the internal web update doesn't function and is set to:

www.westell.com/upgrades/model2200/Verizon/A99-220015-00.xml

In fact, I'm not certain if it can be alternately accessed... or MSIE understands XML or not!

There's no way I'm loading that update until I find out exactly what it is for.

Sounds like a revision history don't come in an update package, huh?

The page is:

My curiosity peaked when I read this: "If you are unable or do not download the patch by November 20,2003 we may need to temporarily block your DSL connection....."

It looks like this is a crucial patch so I was wondering what it changes as they offered no info.

There's more here: »verizon demands westell 2200 patch be installed

Looks like everyone else is speculating, too. With lack of info they deserve such...

FLASH: Don't miss Dan's post of the inside scoop in the above link. Us non-Verizon customers can't see those news groups.

I am using the 2200 as a router. I am on SBC/DSL not Verizon. Do I need to worry about this patch?

If someone's up on the "PPPoE shim" please jump in and fill us in. I was under the impression it was a VPN feature worth looking into... someday.

It doesn't sound like a few modems will flood the SBC system like Verizon might be seeing with a bunch of 2200s but if I were running NAT I'd look further.

What's the complete model number of your modem? This can be found on the label on the underside of your unit.

The "shim" is the PPPoE client which performs the outbound PPPoE encapsulation and the inbound unencapsulation. It can be embedded in the firmware of a DSL modem or router, or as software on the PC (e.g. WinPoET).

Here's the poop. Came across this in another forum:

There are a couple of issues with the Westell 2200 modem that the
firmware update addresses.

First, the 2200 has a built-in PPPoE shim that is set to log into the
VOL network by default - this can cause authentication floods if a
customer has another PPPoE client within their PC or stand-alone
router. If the username/password settings are wrong within the 2200
or a stand-alone PPPoE client, then the authentication failures are
overloading the authentication routers due to the time interval
between the authentication attempts. So changing the 2200 to bridge
mode will stop the 2200's PPPoE shim from attempting to authenticate.
The firmware update changes the time interval between the
PPPoE authentication attempts for the 2200's built-in PPPoE shim.

Second, the firmware update changes the 2200's built-in firewall
default setting from medium to low. This is being done to allow a
greater number of software applications to be compatible with the
2200. Customers are still able to change the firewall
configuration, but it was determined that configuring the firewall
setting to low during the initial account/modem setup provided a
greater degree of account setup success.

There are a few other minor tweaks in the firmware update....

Dan, the confusion is how it appears this "shim" is over and above the regular PPPoE client built into the modem. For example, here's some feature bullets on various products with this feature:

"Allows PPPoE shim on PC to be used simultaneously to run VPN Client Software" - 36R517

When PPPoE is *enabled* on the A90-220015-04 this option comes up as "VC x PPPoE Settings":

"Tunneling
Factory Default = ENABLE
If ENABLED, this option allows PPP traffic to be bridged to the WAN. This feature allows you to use a PPPoE shim on the host computer to connect to the Internet Service Provider, by bypassing the Router’s capability to do this."

It never sounds like the built-in PPPoE client but more like 2 sessions are possible (a form of bridging still on in NAT). See what I mean?

Perhaps there is a "passthrough" of packets that are already PPPoE encapsulated? Otherwise, if you're running a PPPoE client on the PC and also have PPPoE enabled in the modem, the packets would get encapsulated twice, and your DSL connection wouldn't work properly.

My thought is that an already-PPPoE-encapsulated packet is detected and allowed to pass with no additional encapsulation or something. When I get time I was going to try exactly this to see if it gets through - last I checked I can still get 3 PPPoE sessions on my account here.

I wouldn't worry about it unless SBC specficially tells you that you need to update the firmware in the modem.

I have SBC DSL.

Does it matter what model 2200 I get? Meaning one that is meant for Bellsouth customers or ones that are meant for Verizon customers?

I assume that the ones that are for BellSouth customers start with a B90...and ones that are for Verizon start with A90? I also heard that the front panel is different between the two versions...

I'm relatively new to "Westellology" so I hope an expert like Dan can correct me if I'm wrong.

A/B in A90/B90 are revision levels. I'm not sure what the dash number represents but the key number for ISP genre is:

A90-220010-04 Generic (do these exist?)
A90-220015-04 Verizon
A90-220030-04 Bell South

My eBay BellSouth model is B90-220030-04 rev f. I am using it on DSLExtreme, but it will work on any ISP using PPPOE or as a bridge. The firmware is 1.6.33, the latest from BellSouth. Also, some of the status information in the Westell manual is not displayed by this firmware. But it is very fast and stable; no problems at all. You can get lots of information on the BellSouth model at »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »Detailed information for the BellSouth 2100/2200/6100 Westell modems. , including a manual specialized to their version.
