| [Other] Help Subnetting? CISCO! CCNA i was not sure if i should post this question here or in the cisco forum, but i have been trying for ages to figure out how to subnet, not with the defult, subnets and such like,
could some1 explain it step by step, on how to subnet a "Class C" network of
192.183.10.0 - Network ID 80 -- Subnets Needed 20 -- Hosts,

Read Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Vol. 1 Basically what you need is to deploy VLSM. Read Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Vol. 1 and you should be all set. You can get the book from Amazon.co.uk or any nearby computer bookstore.
P.S.: Don't get frighten by the title as if it is not for CCIE, but it is more for CCNA or CCNP instead.

She's CCNA (working in the Jewerly industry now, yes it's sad) but she's real good with Subnetting. I think there is a trick and if you learn that trick everything will fall into place very quickly! -- Posts: 6354 MYIE2

 | reply to connellyg Would it not have been easier to stay in class and get ppl here to help, than sit at home by yourself trying to do it?
Anyway... 192.183.10.0
You cant have 80 subnets on that address because if you were to work it out it would mean you would have to use 7 bits for subnetting which would leave you with 1 bit for hosts, which is impossible. So i'll work it out with 25 subnets.
You need 25 subnets, so you would do.. 2 to the power of whatever til you reached the number you need. So we would need to do, 2 to the power of 5, which is 32... thats more than you need.
so because you have borrowed 5 bits that would leave 3 bits for hosts.
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
The bits in bold is what is used for subnetting... add those together to get your subnet mask.. which is 248.. the full subnet mask would be 255.255.255.248
to work out max subnets you would do 2 to the power of 5.. which is 32. To work out useable hosts you would take off 2.
The same thing goes for hosts... 2 to the power of 3 which is 8. Take off 2 to get the useable amount.
because the last bit in the subnet mask ends at 8.. every subnet address will be a multiple of 8.
so the 1st USEABLE subnet would be 192.183.10.8 the broadcast for that would be 192.183.10.15 The reason being.. 9 - 14 are useable hosts. 15 is the broadcast and 16 would be the NEXT subnet.
Let me know if you need any more help.
Regards.

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't it impossible to subnet according to your requirements you stated above? Either the number of subnets is supposed to be 8 instead of 80 or the number of hosts is supposed to be 2 instead of 20. 80 and 20 together doesn't work, at least, not from what I've learned.
EDIT: Whoops, someone else posted on this while I was responding.

I don't understand why people are saying this, it is obvious connellyg wants to learn this, and is trying, what is the problem coming here and asking for help.
It is no different than asking how to wire a network, and many people step in and help, and they don't say, go to school, take some courses and learn it. -- TD and TH |

 | The ppl that are saying that are currently at college.. connellyg was in this class today with us but went home early.
So I posted to try and get him to understand how to do it. |

| reply to connellyg Everything looks good
except for the host range. The first host IP you have (192.168.0.8) cannot be a host because its the (sub)network address. The host range must be 192.168.0.9 to 192.168.0.14
00001000 = 8 The last three 0s are the host address.
A good rule of thumb is - All zeros means here (the network). All ones means everyone in the network (broadcast). |
