 | Volo Broadband Urbana-Champaign's wireless internet provider appears to be the best around. They recently raised their price to 30.00, not the 28 stated here, but still a bargain compared to anyone else around here. About half what the cable company wanted. Considerably faster than cable or dsl connections. The connection doesn't slow when the kids get home from school, like cable does (at least in my neighborhood). Discounts for annual payments.
A small company and I don't know how long they will last. They have amazing customer service. That too may not last if they get big, and certainly will disappear if they are bought out by someone else.
The biggest drawback is that it costs about $300 to get connected. They come, do a site survey, put an "panel" (kind of like a dish)on your house, run ethernet into whatever rooms you want, and in my case set up a whole house 802.11g network. After that there have been no additional costs. They have very fast customer service. Peter, the owner, is excellent, and answers any questions I have had, helped me diagnose a problem when things slowed, and has been all around great.
Mostly I am happy with them so far. Often get 2000K connections. Just amazing to me. I have one machine that has slowed lately, but they are helping me figure out why (at no charge). (Also, worth noting, is that they don't care how many computers share the connection.
Volo is new but so far has been great. In this area, which is somewhat rural, they provide a great service for those who are out of range of cable or dsl. And for my money, they are better than cable or dsl even though I can get them here in the city. |
