[wireless] WRT54G & WUSB54G Connection Problems

I'm having several problems with my new Linksys wireless network and am not sure which way to turn to get these problems under control.

The WRT54G is connected to my main PC via a wired connection, and on my second PC, I'm trying to connect via the WUSB54G adapter.

Both PC's are running WIndows XP Pro with SP1.

Getting the router set up via a wired connection was not a problem. I then accessed the Router Setup and changed the SSID, PW, set the security to WEP and generated the key(s) with a passphrase. I then saved the changes and exited.

I then installed the USB adapter on the 2nd pc following the Quick Installation guide for XP provided by Linksys. After selecting my network from the list of available networks that were shown (is this the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration that is mentioned in the Linksys set up guide?), I then clicked on properties and selected WEP for Data Encryption, Network Authentication was set to open, and entered the network key. I'm wondering if Authentication should be set to something other than open ? The only other options are Shared, WPA & WPA-PSK. Because I'm not using WPA right now I selected open...

In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, under Wireless Networks, There are several networks that are usually shown to be available, under the Preferred Networks I've deleted all of them except for mine. Then in the advanced option, I have tried both Any Available Network (access point preferred) and Access point (infrastructure) networks only. Switching between these two options doesn't seem to have an impact.

BTW... I'm in an apartment complex so I guess that explains the other networks I can see.

When I view the Wireless Network Connection Status window, it usually indicates I am connected at full signal strength and at a speed that fluctuates somewhere between 24 - 54 Mbps. BTW.... For the time being, the router and the usb adapter are in the same room, are about 10 feet away from each other and are pretty much on a horizontal plane.

The problem is that every couple minutes a dialogue window pops up saying "One or more wireless networks are available" and "To see a list of available networks, click here". When that happens, my network connection fails and I have to double click the Wireless Network Connection icon in the system tray, select my network and click connect in order to activate it again. So where is it that I'm going wrong ? I've searched the Linksys site and there's absolutely no information on this USB adapter. Go figure...

Sorry for the long post, but I felt it necessary to provide as much info as possible.

Thanks,

David...

Re: [wireless] WRT54G & WUSB54G Connection Problem

I am having the same problem using the WRT54G and the WMP54G wireless PCI card and the WPC54G PC card. I can get a strong connection, but I will randomly get the 'click here to see available wireless connections' balloon. The system will automatically reconnect within 30 seconds to two minutes, but this is absolutely unacceptable.

I have called Linksys tech support twice and they have been completely worthless. I plan to call again and ask immediately for second tier support. If that doesn't work, then this thing is going back.

Needless to say, I have tried all sorts of settings. I am not new to wireless, and my old Netgear worked fine - but I wanted to move up to .11g and WPA security.

We'll see...

I am having the same problem that both of you are having. Even with the both the router and the USB adapter in the same room. I called Linksys support and it was horrible. The girl tried to tell me that the problem is the computer's processor??? WTF. Anyway, if anyone knows anything please let me know.

Aaron.

Re: [wireless] WRT54G & WUSB54G Connection Problems

My problem may be similar. I have the same router, but am trying to use a different wireless NIC. Except, I am unable to connect at all beyond receiving the SSID when the router is set for Mixed Mode.

I get the same text balloon on my new Gateway M275 with the built-in .b wireless mini PCI card (Intel chipset). However, I am able to connect just fine with the .g PCMCIA adaptor I picked up with it (Broadcom chipset).

What I noticed is this: when the router is in Mixed Mode, the .b interface only sees the wireless network enough to show me the name of the network and that a network is available. No amount of coaxing will make it connect otherwise. HOWEVER... when I switch to B-Only on the router, the .b interface connects lickety-split.

Methinks there is an issue with the Mixed Mode setting. Have you checked your settings to lock down the B or G rating you want, or are you using Mixed Mode as well? Maybe that would help.

Have you tried switching to a different channel?

Just change it to 64 bit encryption instead of 128, it fixes the problem.

have you tried changing channels .. or try this one do not use the wzc .. you could simply go to the wireless network connection properties then uncheck use windows to cofigure my wireless settings (on the wireless network tab)..then install the wlan monitor.. open the utility folder on the cd that came with the adapter.. theres a setup.exe set the settings .. you would be using the wlan monitor instead

I got similar problem w/ WRT54G. Got a Dell 600M w/Intel WiFi B Series. Also, I have a Panasonic 2.4G Cordless home phone.
I notice I get connection problem or DROP connection when the Panasonic 2.4G start ringing. Right after the Panasonic stop ringing or I stop using it, my Dell laptop start pick up Excellent wireless signal & connect back online rite away.(sometime the cordless phone complete KILL my wireless connection)
I DID went into the Linksys Setup page & change the Channel 1-11 around & I DID change the router to B-ONLY. I still having the same problem.

Does anyone have any solutions for this problem? Thanks in advance!

I had the same problems with all 4 of my WMP54Gs...

I took a chance on a D-Link DWL-G520 PCI adaptor and I'm glad I did. Smaller antenna, 108mbps speed, greater signal retention. Do yourself a favor and try it. Linksys won't be getting my business anytime soon...

Re: [wireless] WRT54G & WUSB54G Connection Problems

I had the same problem with the exact same configuration as yourself and fixed it by disabling Windows XP's Wireless Zero Configuration and using the utility included with the USB adapter. You have to go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services and find the Wireless Zero Configuration towards the bottom there. Open it up, and change the "startup type" to Manual and then hit STOP. Then you should be able to go back to the original utility included with your wireless USB adapter and use that to connect to the network rather than Windows XP's utility.

If you want to make sure Windows won't look for anymore, you might want to go into that windows menu that says "View Available Wireless Networks" that lists all the SSID's and go to "Advanced" and uncheck the box at the top that lets windows automatically find the networks. If you can, let me know if this helps (fro_man98 @ hotmail.com).

I think I eliminated this problem in my network. I have a WRT54G with 4 WUSB54G adapters. The connections would drop after a couple of minutes due to other networks being found. I found an article about how WinXP will connect to another weaker network that has SSID broadcasting enabled over your specified network with SSID broadcast disabled.

I changed my SSID broadcasting to On and this fixed the issue.

I also did the following. I downloaded devcon from MS. I wrote a batch file that disables and then re-enables the connection on bootup. I did this last Wednesday and have since had no issues.

Hope this helps someone.

On the Properties screen for your preferred network, go to the Authentication Tab and uncheck "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network". When you are using an Open or Shared (WEP) network, this option is not necessary and will result in the auto-disconnect problem every few minutes, if left enabled.

Re: [wireless] WRT54G & WUSB54G Connection Problem

Got a similar answer - The Linksys girl told me I needed a bios upgrade for the motherboard. However, in my case, I was getting a message from XP that said I was connecting a high speed USB device to a low speed port and there were no high speed ports on the system. Still waiting for a reply from the M/B mfr., so picked up a PCI USB board instead which "fixed" that problem. However, I'm having connection-dropping problems on both machines with the WUSB54G's. The installation software did not run through as described in the manual, either.

Re: [wireless] WRT54G & WUSB54G Connection Problems

My card attaches fine, but I only get a Speed of 1 megabyte and signal strength that should be stronger since i am only 10 ft from the Switch. I am using a 802.11B also. Could that be why? The laptop I have (HP) connects at 11 Meg on the same switch.

Thanks for the read.....

I have the WUSB54G and the WRT54G with Wifi's firmware.

I actually found that the Linksys utility is the one that disconnects all the time and the WZO stays connected. My problem is that with the WZO, it will not get an IP from the router (Happens with Dlink 614+ as well) and when I manually configure it, it still doesnt work. So i have a choice of random disconnects or a good solid connection and no internet.

USB network adapters should all be recalled and burned.

you are probably connecting through a USB1 connection, the wusb54g works with both but you can only get up to 11MBS transfer rate because usb1 connections only go that high

Re: [wireless] WRT54G & WUSB54G Connection Problems

I Think that i can address the problem many are having with your routers asking you to reconect to your access points every 10 minutes or so. go into your router setup, select access restrictions, select status as ENABLED, click down to edit list of pc's. it will open a new window. in this window enter the MAC address of all pc's that you want to allow acces to your access point, and make sure your policy sais ENABLE. this should solve the problem

Thanks Richard. This seemed to fix the issues I was having!

Hey A_C, can you give an example of the batch file you wrote to enable the connection on startup?

Thank You...

I also had semi-random connection drops with my Linksys WRT54G router, which I bought 3 days ago, and my Thinkpad T30. After reading the forums, I was certain the problem was with the router. I did everything I could think of, and more (flashed firmware, played with all settings in its configuration utility and in Windows, tried literally hundreds of combinations) - everything to no avail. The wireless connection would still drop occasionally, every 10 minutes or so. It was incredibly frustrating, and I almost decided to return it back to store.

Then, in a flash of insight , I decided to check the drivers on my Thinkpad. I found new drivers (ver. 3.0.4.205) for "High Rate Wireless LAN Mini-PCI combo card" on IBM's website and installed them.

Guess what - no more connection drops since then. Not a single one. So, Linksys router was not to blame, at least in my particular case.

I hope this story will serve as a reminder for people who, like me, forget to check the other end...
