Re: WPA fix!! for WinXP Linksys WRT54G/WMP54G

:D:D That registry fix has solved my problem for free. Thanks SO MUCH for posting the instructions. While I enjoyed a month of no dropped connections with my Odyssey trial, I am much happier now that my no-disconnection bliss will not seize up on me in 30 days or less.

No point in paying for software that is already (for all practical purposes) bundled in Windows, once you have the settings right. You guys just saved me $50. I applied the registry modification on the 20th (after your reply to my earlier note) and have not had my connection drop since then (going on 2 days now). Thanks again!!!

Re: [wireless] WRT54G and WPA problems!

WPA Registry Addition
(WPAAuthMode.reg)
Just wondering if everyone that has or had this problem is using the Linksys WRT54G and/or a Linksys PC or notebook adapter?

The registry addition/tweak mentioned earlier in the thread has worked for my disconnection issue as well! For those of you who are uncomfortable with editing the registry, I am posting a registry file which will add/merge the tweak into your registry.

Whom may we thank for this solution? I did a google search for the registry key and found the only refernce to it was on the BBR forums.

In this forum, I believe the person to thank is pwsc See Profile, or "Peter," specifically for this post. He credits someone named "Alex" as his source. Bottom line: It worked for me and it seems to be working for everyone who had this specific issue. Great find! (And thanks again to cableb4me See Profile for posting the reg file for me here yesterday!)

I'm using the WRT54G but with a Dell TrueMobile 1300 MiniPC adapter, NOT a Linksys adapter. I don't believe the problem is specific to any particular adapter brand, and I'm not even sure it's specific to a particular router either.

One question: Does it matter what value is used for the "group renewal value"? Should I change it back to the default (whatever that was)?

I'm pleased that the registry key fix is working for others. The thanks are appreciated, but Steely is correct that someone named Alex emailed the solution to me. He had seen my numerous posts on the Microsoft wireless networking newsgroup, both complaining about this problem and discussing work-arounds. (After numerous postings over a couple of months, no one from Microsoft even acknowledged the problem existed.)

Yes, I think you can change the key renewal period back to something more reasonable. Prior to getting the registry key fix, I had reduced mine to the ridiculously low value of 10 seconds in order to avoid a certain application from losing its connection. Now its back to a more reasonable value. I imagine that a low key renewal period would adversely affect overhead of the wireless network, as well as potentially increase the ability for someone to compromise a WPA key.

Regards,

PWSC

Where do you make the change to the key renewal value?

My group key renewal is 86400 (one day) - which is set on the router's Wireless > Wireless security menu tab.

I checked Google and couldn't find a Miscrosoft "wireless" networking newsgroup. pwsc Can you provide a link? Thanks.

As Ned posted above, in the WRT54G setup pages, go to Wireless Security under the Wireless tab. I was advised by another DSLR member to set mine to 30000. Not sure if that's good, bad or indifferent, but that's where it is.

The registry tweak seems to have fixed my connection issue, but now it displays "Wireless Connection Unavailable" even though I'm connected and posting this from the laptop.

Did you reboot? Is there more than one wireless connection listed in your Network Connections window?

Hello All,
First, here is the Microsoft wireless forum:
Microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless.

Also, regarding the Group renewal key which is on the router.I am currently using a Linksys Befw11s4 ver. 4 router and Dell TM1300 card. I am hesitant to apply this Registry tweek. Reason being, my problem is, when connected and surfing etc, if I re-boot, or, power off/on my Laptop, I get a good Wireless signal, however, I cannot get to the internet, and the TM1300 status utility will show, Tkip,Wep,key absent, to resolve this, I have Power off /on the router. I had a long discussion with a knowlegable Dell Rep last week, he stated that the 'key absent' has something to do with the Key Renewal value. I was using 3600 secs, he wanted me to try '0', however, with this model router, 3600 is the lowest you can go. Believe it or not, Linksys is upgrading me to the WRT54G, with some $$ of course. I then will try the 0 renewal key value, if I still have my problem, I then will try the Reg. tweek.

You hit the nail right on the head. The laptop/wireless network was basically a gift for my wife. She's been complaining about the dropped connections almost from the moment I set everything up a couple of weeks ago. Now that the reg fix has gotten everything back on track, she's happy, I'm happy, life is good!

Steely,
You said 'You hit the nail right on the head', does that mean that your situation was what I am reporting above??
Thank You

Coolski, why don't you just try the reg fix? It will either work or it won't. It sounds like you might have a different issue, but you can always delete the entry if you find you don't need it. Besides, if you do upgrade to a WRT54G and want to use WPA, you're probably going to need it anyway.

EDIT: When I said "You hit the nail right on the head," I was addressing dig_it in the post above yours.

Looks like the registry tweak has worked for others who have the key absent issue »WPA: "Key Absent" (last post)

Google Groups isn't as extensive as I had thought. It doesn't have the newsgroup Microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless

Strangely, SBC (which is not known for good newsgroup selection) had it.

Hey guys,

I have a Linksys wrt54G wireless router as well with a D-Link G650 card on my laptop. I too am having problems but they are different to anything posted here. I have tried this on 2 Laptops now and both are having the same problems.

When I enable WPA Shared keys and turn either laptop on after I log on to XP and things load up I get the blue Screen of Death. If I turn WPA off on the linksys things are back to normal.
