AOL said that over the past three years it had invested more than $3.5 billion in the service to make it even easier, faster, and more reliable. The cost increase will help AOL continue to improve its network and also help defray the cost of its merger with Time Warner Inc. earlier this year.

"This was something I had anticipated," said Rob Lancaster, a Yankee Group analyst. "Their costs associated with the merger have been very high and AOL hasn’t been unaffected by the slump in online advertising. Just like the rest of its smaller competitors, AOL is looking to increase its revenues.
