AOL is "Number One based on the number of subscribers, and I assume paying subscribers, not the number of free disk trials that get used or screen names. It seemed like the number grew from 17 million to 29 million a bit too quickly.

I am sure if a fair comparison test were developed and conducted based on speed, security, value for money, and ease of use, I am fairly sure they would take "ease of use" and fall short in other areas, especially compared to Earthlink, MSN, and other national ISPs.

Some memorable and relevant tag lines I've seen around:

AOL as #1 is like excrement for dinner - 29 billion flies can't be wrong!

AOL may say they're #1, but they actually treat their customers like "Number Two."

i think the reason it grew so quickly was because other countries were brought into the "census" .. i was surprised too when it went from 21 million to 29 million but on zdnet somewhere they brought upt he subject of international countries.. and something else...
