You can get around this by just uninstalling Verizon/MSN 8's co branded version and doing a web install of MSN 8 software from MSN.com. When you log in with your already merged hotmail email address and password, it will still let you log in. It still knows you are a verizon customer. Once the MSN.com home page opens, go to this URL »membercenter.msn.com/ (I tried to go here with the Verizon MSN 8 installed and it would not work, but it might with you), if you can get to this page it gives you the option to download newest version MSN 9.
I just went to membercenter.msn.com, logged in with my @msn email address that I created when I installed the verizon MSN software, and clicked the download the software link. Ran into a problem installing it, but I think that was cos of my firewall and privacy software, not cos of the Verizon MSN 8.
