On the proxomitron homepage , »www.computerstuff.net/prox/, 3 paragraphs down next to the date 9/29/1999 is some info about Adsubtract using Proxomitron code.

Very interesting indeed. I wonder how Adsubtract will come out in my tests.

I read an Adsubtract Pro review posted earlier by Ethics, and it did not seem to pass some of his tests, especially the adult website. At this point, I think any of the apps are easier than Proxo and/or Junkbuster. But then again, just like with anything else, given time the application can be easy to use.

Hi,
Earlier I used both WW and Proxomitron together, but when I began looking at my speed (I have 10Mbits/sec up and down) WW was the first program to get uninstalled, second was BID. I found Proxomitron the one that is most friendly towards my speed.

Arne

Failing Webwasher testpage & Filter merging

#1
The webwasher test page contains 'simulated' advert images. Most of the images can't be clicked to take you to the desired advertiser. These are filtered by Webwasher's image size filtering.

Proxomitron filters rarely uses image dimension as a filter trigger but instead examine the HTML/Java/Javascript of the advert. This is why Proxomitron fails the Webwasher test but is also why the new skyscaper ads were blocked by Proxomitron without a filter update.

#2
The filter merging issue has been resolved in Version 4 (the review was based on v3, which is still very good).

Proxomitron has an active Yahoogroups forum and a pretty good FAQ (»www.geocities.com/johnsankey.geo···ron.html)

Re: Ad/Cookie Blocking App Reviews

Hi,
i am currently wondering whether i should use WW or Proxo. I have tried Proxo first but it seemed to me to slow down things veeery much. Some months ago, i switched therefore to WW. However, actually i like the features of Proxo much better. In fact, it lets you re-write complete html pages on-the-fly. So i have two issues which of today make me use WW. I think i'll re-test Proxo since DaneArne said he prefers Proxo just for speed reasons. (I've read somewhere that the problem is not bandwidth itself, but rather processor use - growing with bandwidth. I'm on ADSL...)
Now my two issues:
1. Speed. Can anyone tell about his/her experience?
2. I need to sidestep another proxy (not proxomitron, but another local http-proxy) on certain urls. WW now has very sophisticated options to use up to four different other proxies based on urls or to connect directly. How can i do this in Proxomitron?

Well, yes, maybe i should post this to the Proxo Maillist rather than here. But maybe there are some hardcore Proxomiters here...
TIA,
Andreas

All, thanks for responding and sharing your experience with us. Andreas, good question on the multiple proxies. Since I do not use any outside of Proxo, I cannot really use this feature. However, if you click here, it appears multiple proxies can be added and easily used.

Excerpt:

Adding lists of proxy servers

It's possible to have multiple proxies. You can create a list of proxy server entries, click "Add" and enter the list file name in the format $LST(bypass.txt). You can also cut&paste a list into the Add window, or enter multiple items by pressing Ctrl+Enter after each entry in the add dialog.

Can you let us know how you make out?

A couple of interesting Proxo filters

»groups.yahoo.com/group/prox-list···age/3314 :

The OAS-ads aren't blocked by the standard-filters because there is a
JavaScript that writes another JavaScript that writes the banner-code.

This one looks like it is missing an extra > in the bounds after script.

Did you remember to open IE Tools/options/advanced and check "allow 1.1 through proxy servers?" ..
Yes I have that enabled. DSLR still shows "page compression OFF" unless I bypass DSLR.

That's what I do with DSLR, leave it in the bypass URL list.

ADSUBTRACT CE REVIEW

In my original post, I stated the features behind AdSubtract PRO. Since this version of the program is downloadable upon purchase only, my review will cover the application CE version 2.1, which is a step down.

Unlike the PRO version, CE does not have the ability to block:
    •pop up windows
    •animated GIF images
    •background music
    •Java & JavaScript
    •Background Images
    •Referrers
Hence, this review will rely on cookie testing and advertisement testing.

This version is not free, but enables one to try it for 14 days. Purchase price is $14.95. Other alternatives exist that handle the features of CE and PRO for free.

Now to the test. The application size is 2.54 MB upon download. After installation and execution of the program, ZAP alerts the user that "adsub.exe" version 2,1,0,0 requests to act as a server.

By default, the application is set to filter advertisements and not cookies for all URLs. Enabling the cookie filter, one sees a default set of URLs that are "exceptions" to the general cookie and ad filter for all URLs. An example of the URLs listed were yahoo.com. The user needs to check this URL list to determine if they should remain or be deleted.

All other defaults I kept the same, and are really just bells and whistles. However, two things to mention, the program uses localhost:8080 as the proxy setting, and it enables the ability for program database updates. The program claims supports AOL and Opera browsers.

Visiting CNN.com and ABCnews.com revealed six new cookies in my Cookies and TIF folders. Advertisements were not blocked whatsoever.

Two sites failed, no need to pursue this further. For a company that charges to use a product like this and severely fails, I give this one two thumbs down.

As stated, many more alternatives that are free, and actually work.

Review complete.

Re: Ad/Cookie Blocking App Reviews

Zhen, the reason why AdSubtractCE didn't work was because you set it up wrong. I'm not sure what the settings are for Adsubtract CE, but the one for Adsubtract Pro uses port 4444, not 8080. The port 8080 is for Proxomitron, not ASP. Since your port settings were wrong, Adsubtract obviously didn't work whatsoever. PLease make those changes and lemme know how it goes.

P.S. How did your port settings not change upon the installation of AdSubtract? I think that port settings change is made during the installation....

P.S.S Are you running both Proxomitron and Adsubtract at the same time?

Also make sure to start your browser after ASP has loaded. A quick double check for IE is in tools, internet options, connections, lan settings. Proxy Server should be checked and under advanced, http, AdSubtract as the address and 4444 as the port.

Hope this helps.

Zhen I have a similar problem as KBB.
If I check the appropriate option to allow proxy thru 1.1, all works fine during the current session. However upon a reboot, that setting is reset once again to NOT checked. I tried having AdSubtract start with windows and manually and it always seems to reset itself. Any ideas on why and or other people having a similar problem?

AdSubtract CE's own proxy settings, within the CE application, had the use of "localhost" port "8080". It has failed the review.

Zhen, I don't even have CE. But I downloaded it, had no application open when I installed it and it chose port 4444 upon installation!

4444. Not 8080.

I would really uninstall it and reinstall it as I'm not sure what caused the misconfiguration for you. Try disabling Proximitron upon the installation!

I just tried cnn and abc, and not there was not one ad or popup. I think your previous review is EXTREMELY INACCURATE since it seems it wasn't installed properly.
