Re: Official Speed Tests Thread

I went to several speed test sites to do speed checks, including the Broadbandreports and I consistantly get speeds for DL in the 4-7 Mbps range. While the verizon tech was here doing the install he tested on two different sites; see the url below and when I go to those sites I get a 14.8 Mbps DL and 1.7 Mbps UL speeds.

»miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/

»infospeed.verizon.net/fttp/speedtest90..

Anyone know why all of the other sites report a slower speed? When I talked to verizon tech support they said the two sites they used (above) were more accurate and the others aren't accurate with FIOS.

The Miranda site above gives the following detailed info:

I have run the FIOS Optimization from verizon and checked everything I can think of.

Any thoughts?

I recommend Speakeasy (two closest to you), NAC's east coast server or Megapath's west coast. Then optonline's test64.

While we are posting speed tests, I might as well.

Had Verizon FIOS installed today. Yipeeeeee. If you are using dslreports.com speed tests, go somewhere else! you are NOT getting accurate speed tests. also go download the win xp sp2 file: »www.softwarepatch.com/wi ··· sp2.html and time your dl speed.

The best way to test your speed is with net meter set graph to 15000000 and start a news group download from giganews or 100proofnews or somewhere with good service. Not only will it show your max speed on a pretty graph but it is also a way to get your moneys worth. I use my 100gb per month account with 100proofnews every month sometimes in the first 10 days.

Mitch in Staten Island, NY. Verizon FIOS installed today. Consistent speeds of 10.2/1.8 mb - as advertised. My wireless Toughbook has thus far given slightly less at ~ 8/1.8 mb. Techs sent to do install were competent and helpful. So far, so good.

You guys are ridiculous! Ridiculous!!! I've been on dial up (56kbps) since I was 8 (15 now...), played online games, downloaded large files (large for dial up, such as 600 megs)...And you guys are going "oh....only 10mbps...e.t.c.. haha, you know what I would do for that kind of speed!!? Imagine, my ping in counter-strike, or bf2. Imagine, I could actually download videos faster than I can watch them. =O...You all make me jealous! I'd be happy with 256kbps DSL, if I could get it...

NTS Communications FTTU service w/2 phone lines very outside of Lubbock, TX.

Previous choices were a crappy 512 DSL, or dial-up, until NTS came into town.. we jumped on the fiber service (FTTU they call it) because well, at the same price (slightly lower) we could have our two phone lines, plus internet that was 16X the speed of our very crappy DSL. In our area they offer TV/Phone/Internet.

Advertised speed: 8.0Mbps x 512Kbps (the upload tests at 1.0Mbps consistently though althought this isn't advertised)

Test results:

Using »speedtest.tx.charter.com/

TCP/Web100 Network Configuration Tester v5.1.1
click START to begin
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 1.03Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 7.80Mb/s
You are connected to a 10 Mbps Half-Duplex link

click START to re-test

I'm happy with that. And my downloads are CONSISTENTLY that high, I don't need a speed test to show me that my download speed is working as advertised (Beats out every other connection in our area by far)

sure you would be happy with that for a while a few months 6 months at the most then you would want something faster.

If the big corporations were not greedy most people would have fiber by now, it is all about the money just like oil corporations and them suppressing runing your car on water a "hydrogen" set up in your car.

just think how much money the oil business is worth, think if they stops selling oil :O lol

one day we will use water for are car's

yes fiber will one day be every where

they roll it out slowly to make the most money and spend the least and I think it has less with them not haveing the money from rolling it out in too many places at once.

I am jealous that you have fiber and I do not.

I do like the fact that verizon is was smart and jump started this market and jumped the other businesses.

after fiber is out every where then we will see some sort of technology jump.

I've had FIOS for quite some time now. It's always giving me a healthy 15kbps down and 2+kbps up. A couple of weeks ago, my up time went down to .25kpbs while still maintaining my 15kpbs down. They came out and replaced the box and now the up time is back to normal, but the down time is slower than 2kbps. Perhaps I need to unplug the fiber and clean the connection on the new box? Not sure just yet and haven't called them back on it since it's the holidays.

I've tweaked with several great packages, but nothing helps. Kind of at a loss at the moment, but I've been doing networking since 1980 and will try solving it myself first. It seems to be from dropped packets on the download that is killing me. Not sure why just yet but I'll run a sniffer and see if I can figure anything out. Maybe I'll try the Actiontec router the guy left here and see if my Linksys is the bottle neck, however doubtful since it was maintaining a full 15kbps down before the box change.
