If the big corporations were not greedy most people would have fiber by now, it is all about the money just like oil corporations and them suppressing runing your car on water a "hydrogen" set up in your car.

I had 5mbs down and 1mbs up 10 years ago on cable. I recently came back to cable but am awaiting my FIOS install later this Summer. Previous choices were a crappy 512 DSL, or dial-up, until NTS came into town.. we jumped on the fiber service (FTTU they call it) because well, at the same price (slightly lower) we could have our two phone lines, plus internet that was 16X the speed of our very crappy DSL. In our area they offer TV/Phone/Internet.

Advertised speed: 8.0Mbps x 512Kbps (the upload tests at 1.0Mbps consistently though althought this isn't advertised)

FIOS [Verizon Fiber] is in trials nearby and should be available by 2006. James, what kind of link does your employer have? I co-locate with a Swedish firm to get 100mbit backbone connected speeds via Bonet.SE.
